Donald Earl Collins is a contributing writer for Al Jazeera English-Opinions. His articles have also appeared in The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Salon, NBC News, The Guardian, and HuffPost. He is the author of Fear of a “Black” America: Multiculturalism and the African American Experience (2004), Boy @ The Window: A Memoir (2013), and Spinning Sage's Gold: Allegories on the Western-Dominated Present and a Possible Post-Western Future (2025). Outside of his work as a writer, Dr. Collins has also worked in academia and in the nonprofit world. He has been a professorial lecturer in history and American studies at American University, a visiting assistant teaching professor in African American history at Loyola University Maryland, and an adjunct associate professor in history with University of Maryland University College. For more than four years, Dr. Collins served as the senior program officer/deputy director of College Access and Success Initiatives with the Center for School and Community Services at the Academy for Educational Development (AED - now FHI 360) in Washington, DC and New York City. For three years, he was a program officer/assistant director of the New Voices National Fellowship Program at AED (now FHI 360), a program for emerging leaders in the social justice field. Dr. Collins has a Ph.D. in History from Carnegie Mellon University, and a B.A. and M.A. in History from the University of Pittsburgh. He lives in Montgomery County, Maryland with his partner and adult son.
