Fred Guterl is an award winning journalist who has been writing about science and technology for more than 30 years. He was executive editor of Scientific American from 2010 to 2017 and before that deputy editor of Newsweek International. He has also edited Discover and IEEE Spectrum magazines, worked as a foreign correspondent based in London, England, and did a short stint at IBM under CEO Lou Gerstner. Guterl's writing and editing have garnered numerous awards. He led Scientific American to win the General Excellence Award from the National Society of Magazine editors for the first time in its long history. His article "Riddles in the Sand" (Discover) won the Journalism Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Overseas Press Club honored his article "The Wasteland" (Newsweek) for environmental writing (written with reporting from Eve Conant and other Newsweek reporters). He is author of Fate of the Species.
