Jannette O. Domingo is one of the Seven Sisters who challenged Swarthmore College to live up to its progressive ideals in the late1960s. A founding member of the Swarthmore Afro-American Student Society, she was also among the first to graduate with a Concentration in Black Studies. After a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science/International Relations at Swarthmore, she earned Masters and Doctoral degrees in Economics from McGill University and Columbia University, respectively. Her career at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York was grounded in the youthful activism of Seven Sisters and a Brother. She served for many years as chairperson of the Department of African American Studies; founding director of the McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program; and co-founder and co-director of the Police Studies Certificate Program. She also served as Dean of Graduate Studies, focusing on student services and new degree programs including a Masters in International Crime and Justice. As a mentor and advocate for students and colleagues, she helped create a more inclusive community at John Jay. In retirement, Jannette continues to find joy in seeing the world — especially with her husband Clifford Charles— and illuminating the genealogy and migration stories of Virgin Islands families.
