Jarvis can list a variety of curious jobs on his resume, including "Game Show Host." With a hostess and small crew, he toured the USA as host of a live game show for six years. In a word, the show was "zany." Most of his career life was in radio broadcasting. This helps explain the variety of other jobs. Working in radio is like being a movie actor; only a select few hit it big, and he was never selected. He kept doing it because it was a darn fun way to barely earn a living. Two months before his 60th birthday, Jarvis had a stroke. It seemed his life of adventures was over. Rehabilitation would require extensive therapy, and it might be a year before he could even walk again. Being in recovery meant having a lot of time on his hands. He would have liked to spend that time narrating audio books – a side gig he started doing several years earlier. But the stroke had affected his speech. His smooth radio voice was gone. No one would hire him to voice their outgoing phone message, much less narrate an entire book. Then it occurred to him that, if he couldn't narrate books, perhaps he could try writing them. His mother had been a high school English teacher, and she had instilled in him a love of reading. Authoring books gave Jarvis something productive to do while he was unable to do much of anything else. Now he has recovered to a fairly normal life. He'd never say he was glad to suffer a stroke, but it did propel him to pursue an enjoyable new avocation. He hopes readers find his work enjoyable, too.
