Karen Emilson was born and raised in southern Ontario, the daughter of Irish immigrants on her mother’s side; and an eclectic mix of Swiss, German and English on her father’s side. In 1982 as a young bride, she moved to a cattle ranch along the shores of Lake Manitoba. Karen spent little time in the hayfield or on the lake, but rather worked as a journalist, publishing the narrative non-fiction Canadian bestsellers, "Where Children Run" and its sequel "When Memories Remain." She also co-authored the memoir, "My Every Breath" with transplant survivor, Anna Maynard. When Lake Manitoba overflowed its banks in 2011, flooding out the farmland at Siglunes, she was inspired to finish the novel started ten years earlier about the Icelandic immigrants who carved out a living there. "Be Still the Water" was shortlisted for the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction and a finalist in the 2019 Canadian Book Club Awards. Now she lives with her husband and little dog in Grunthal, Manitoba and writes fiction full time. Her forthcoming novel, "I Saw What You Did," is also set in Manitoba’s Interlake, a hardscrabble place rich in atmosphere and history—inspiring her compelling characters and thought-provoking plots.
