As an elementary Reading Specialist, I've spent every working day for more than 15 years teaching kids to read. My first books, the middle-grade novels "Zombiekins" and "Sir Fartsalot Hunts the Booger", are often labeled "reluctant reader" titles because their humor and cool illustrations appeal to many kids who aren't otherwise keen on reading. As a reading teacher I wondered, Why not make books like that for beginner readers? You know, get them hooked on reading at the starting line, BEFORE they become "reluctant readers." So that's what I am trying to do now. I hope my early reader books will teach kids essential reading skills (phonics rules, sight words, etc.) without them ever suspecting!
