Leila Philip was born in New York City. She graduated cum laude from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature, and earned a Fifth-Year Degree in East Asian Studies. Philip earned an MFA in Fiction and Nonfiction at Columbia University as the Woolrich Fellow in Writing. She has received numerous awards for her writing, including fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts and The National Endowment for the Humanities. Philip's other awards include the PEN/Martha Albrand Special Citation for Nonfiction, the Documentation of American Life Book Award, the Victorian Society of America Publication Award and has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize in Literature. Her essays have been widely anthologized and included in numerous collections including; Brief Encounters (Norton), Creating Nonfiction (St. Martins Press), Why We're Here (Colgate University Press), Maiden Voyages (Vintage Books). Philip has taught at a number of universities, including Princeton, Columbia, Vassar, and Colgate and is currently a professor of Creative Writing and Literature in the English Department at the College of the Holy Cross. Fluent in Japanese, she writes on Japan as well as about art for a variety of venues including Art in America and Art Critical.
