I began writing short stories when I was 7 or 8 years old; the earliest of these endeavors seemed strangely derivative of 1950s Japanese sci-fi films. I have worked as a magazine editor for Defenders of Wildlife, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, and the National Audubon Society and have served as a communications director and major-donor proposal writer for nonprofit groups that focus on national park protection. I also have written for radio, TV, and motion pictures, primarily as a production director with National Audubon Television. Although most of my eleven books have focused on wildlife conservation or on history in the U.S. West, I also write fiction and published two novels, one in the late 1980s and one in the early 1990s. My newest book is Return of the Bison: A Story of Survival, Restoration, and Hope for a Wilder World, published in September 2023 by Mountaineers Press. It looks only briefly at the well-known story of the bison's near extinction and focuses instead on bison conservation and restoration, starting in the 1880s. It looks closely at today's commercial bison operations, tribal work with bison, bison history in Canada and Mexico, bison recovery in Europe, and where the bison stands today, including the implications of bison survival for other large herding species, such as elephants and giraffes.
