Scott van Niekerk was born and raised in Kariba, Zimbabwe, in a childhood shaped by war, wildlife, wilderness, boarding school and water. Growing up on the edge of the Zambezi, he learned early about beauty, danger, belonging, and loss. After immigrating to the United States, he built a life and career as a Physical Therapist in New York, working with the human body while carrying the African bush inside him. His writing explores memory, identity, masculinity, and the long echo of place. African Becoming is his first memoir.
