Steve Van Slyke and his wife Kay live aboard their 41-foot cutter sailboat, Kavenga, on Puget Sound during the summer months. The rest of the year they live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Together Steve and Kay have logged over 30,000 miles at sea including a circumnavigation of the Pacific, culminating in a 4600-mile, 38-day passage from Japan to Vancouver Island. The story of their three-year cruising adventure is told in the non-fiction book, "Kavenga's Wake". Steve was the Navigation Officer aboard the USS Vesuvius (AE-15), an ammunition ship operating in the South China Sea and combat areas during the Viet Nam war. Originally hailing from Oregon, Steve is a graduate of both Oregon State University and University of Oregon. Some of Steve's favorite authors are Ken Follett, Pat Conroy, Clive Cussler, Wilbur Smith, David McCullough, Jared Diamond, Richard Dawkins and Stephen Ambrose.
