more PG than I expected

this is a "Meh" story for me. maybe I was just expecting more of an R rated style. In all honesty I've read fanfiction that is 10x better on this topic/idea. I tried, but I just couldn't fall in love with any of the characters.

wonderful performance

I must say the absolute deadpan narration makes the kinky smut a lot less mortifying than it is.
Tonation makes it fairly easy to tell characters apart without sounding silly.

The book itself is amusing enough. A good setup for the trilogy, not that strong on its own.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
One has to see how the story goes. The last part of the trilogy is good but not as well-knit as II - which is a masterpiece of plot weaving. This one left a lot of questions unanswered and I wish they added the Summer Palace (the epilogue) to the end of the narration.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Kings Rising?
Laurent and Damen under the stars.... Charles and Lamen :)

Ok story, poorly written

The author needs a lesson in writing and how to show emotion without overusing adverbs that are simply any word with -ily tacked onto the end. Neutrally, Stingingly, Mincingly, Grittily. Sometimes in sentences one after another.

COULDN'T STOP LISTENING!!!!

I absolutely loved this!!!! The book was amaizing!!!! The narration was amaizing!!!! Everything was amaizing!!!! No wonder my friend gave me an amaizing review!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my favourites ruined in audio form

So the narrator Stephen Bel Davies isn't terrible but he has a high, lilting voice that seemed so incongruous to Damen, a man of simplicity and brawn. It was so bad that I was constantly jolted out of the story and numerous times considered quitting part way through. I did download the second book in hopes that I would get used to it and even after 12 hours, I couldn't. If i didn't have a 10 hour drive, there is no way I would have downloaded the second in this series. I also felt that the narrator's voices for the different characters would carry into Damen's thoughts as though he wasn't able to transition between voices cleanly.

The story, however, is AMAZING and everyone should read it.

This ticks all my boxes

I'm finally leaving a review after listening to the whole trilogy a second time.

When I was reading this book for the first time, I was convinced that the author was going to have to perform some serious black magic if she ever wanted me to like Laurent... having finished the series and without spoilers I have to say: I love Laurent and I will fight to defend his honour.

Pacat is the kind of writer who can paint a vivid picture in your mind with just a few words. She casually sprinkles into her descriptions such masterful turns of phrase that I often find myself pausing the audio just to repeat back a line because the rhythm and the richness of the words are just so satisfying. Her characters have clear motivations and strong personalities that drive the plot forward and make it feel like you're reading about a real political struggle with real emotional and philosophical stakes.

Davies does an excellent job putting voices to the colourful cast of characters that Pacat has populated her world with, a true professional.

Of the three books, I think this one is probably the weakest and it might take a bit of patience to really get invested in the story (which admittedly ends abruptly) but the experience of the whole trilogy was more than worth it and makes rereading the first book a completely new experience thanks to what I know now.

This series contains themes of sexual abuse, CSA, slavery and many other potentially triggering themes, so if you are sensitive to fiction that covers these topics you might want to avoid it or do some research to find out if this is a safe read for you. For me, I loved every minute of it and I think this trilogy is going to become one of those things I revisit every few years just to get all the feels back.

Hard to listen to sometimes

some of the things that happen in this book are difficult to listen to, so trigger warning for sexual and physical abuse. but if you can get through it it's very good

Good but the volume fluctuates a lot

The readers volume caused me to constantly be adjusting but I like the storyline. Exciting mind games and entertaining character development.
