What makes this book work isn’t the spice (though it’s top tier), there could be zero spice and I’d still go feral for it. It’s the family dynamic for me. The way they love and prioritize each other, communicate openly, and show up with real care for each other and for the FMC has me feral. There’s no jealousy-as drama, no competition within the unit, no “who will she really choose” nonsense. She isn’t a prize. she’s an addition to something that’s already stable.
The consent in this book deserves a special mention because that’s the one thing I demand of any dark romance that I read. It’s explicit, ongoing, intelligent, and never played for ego sake. They say what they mean and mean what they say and they show what happens with the yes and they show what happens with a no. That built trust in the narrative very early on for me. Even the few kinks or dynamics that aren’t my personal taste to read were written with enough care that they never felt gross or coercive. at worst, I was bored by the spicy things I’m not personally into, not uncomfortable. That’s rare and frankly delightful.
The only thing I would nitpick (and I’m reaching here because it’s more of a personal taste thing) is that it could have sacrificed the tiniest bit of spice for the sake of making more room for the already excellent plot, or it could be longer, again, for the sake of the plot. because the plot and relational setup are genuinely strong. but again, that’s a preference, not a flaw.
If you’re like me and usually avoid why choose because of jealousy, flimsy consent, or FMCs being forced to manage everyone’s feelings: this book is the exception. It’s dark, violent, and messy but the relationships are grounded, functional, and deeply intentional and feral af. 12/10 read this one.
