У небольшого Соленого озера, что в двух шагах от реки Вычегды люди селились еще в XV веке. Наиболее предприимчивые из них уже в то время начали строить на берегу первые «варницы», специальных приспособления для «варения соли». В последствии эти варницы стали основой крупного промышленно-торгового центра - Соль Вычегодска, процветанию которого помимо солеварения способствовало и его удобное расположение на судоходной реке. Но настоящую известность это место получило после появления здесь деятельного и предприимчивого семейства Строгановых. В 1526 году Аника Строганов выкупил первые «варницы» на берегу Соленого озера, что в последующем позволило Строгановым стать обладателями не только невиданного богатства, но и безграничной силы и власти.
