I almost abandoned this audiobook because of the slow-paced reading, punctuated by odd mid-sentence pauses. I had to speed the narration up to 1.5 in order to making the listening barely tolerable. I’m glad I did, because the content of the book is excellent. It pairs the dramatic story of the author’s life and faith journey with simultaneous events taking place in the Catholic Church and the world. Carroll’s insider’s view of the Church is fascinating, and his criticism of the Church’s shortcomings is insightful.
