Description

From The New York Times best-selling author of the smash hit One Second After series comes 48 Hours, a nail-biting and prescient thriller about a solar storm with the power to destroy the world's electrical infrastructure.

In 48 hours, the Earth will be hit by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, a "Carrington Event" that has the power to shut down and possibly destroy the world's electrical infrastructure. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit: Global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off.

Will the world's population successfully defend itself in the wake of the CME, or will mass panic lead to the breakdown of society as we know it?

William R. Forstchen is at his best in 48 Hours, a tale of the resilience of American citizens when faced with a crisis.

Why all the religion?

as a huge fan of post-apocalyptic fiction I'm used to having the narrative of many stories coming from a right-wing side of the scale and can largely roll with it (I am the rarest of beasts...a moderate). I know that if any of these PA scenarios ever actually happen the vast majority of anyone surviving will likely be of the right-wing persuasion. What always boggles my mind however is that the characters who are supposed to be the scientific experts are often portrayed as people of faith...and that is not supported by reality. I find it hard to stomach the actual science and technology content when paired with characters or authors who believe in imaginary friends in the sky. Your beliefs are your beliefs and mine are mine...lots of people believe in crazy stuff but it would be nice to escape the scourge of religion when trying to escape into a story who's own premise pretty much contradicts the idea of a compassionate and loving "god"...unless you are all about the old testament of course.
The repeated religious references and quotes in this caused me to cringe repeatedly. I've read much from Forstchen previously and don't remember such an annoying religious undercurrent...so I am pretty bummed by this purchase. If anyone can recommend some solid post-apocalyptic fiction with little or no religious overtones I'd love your suggstions

Seemed like a desperate attempt

Not up to the standard set in the Matherson series. Just another book presenting a mass population extinction event.

I loved this book!

A realistic display of how human beings would react facing extinction, scary, but very true.

slow book, but overall decent

The narrator did an annoying British accent that kinda ruined the book for me. It is a slower story, and it took a while to get into it. Didn't expect the ending, but it was good.

The author is Christian so it is expected that religion will play a part in his books.

Future?

This is a very interesting book. Hopefully it remains fiction and people react more humanely than a lot of these characters.

Let’s hope that this is closer to fantasy than to reality

Let’’s hope that this is closer to fantasy than to reality, that it won’t or cannot happen, that humanity includes more generous humans than it does egocentric humans.

at last a post apocalyptic novel that Make sens

This author is the best apocalyptic writer that Is. The believable scientifically accuracate description of the event is fantastic. I live the fact that you follow the personal president' handling of the situation. Although I was not sure about the rash couple's decision at first, it all turns out to make sens as it finally catch up to them later. The population's reactions are so realistic that I would have take another couple of hour of that

Enjoyable

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I found the story a little hard to follow at times and had to rewind to catch myself up. However I was invested enough to put in the effort because I was enjoying the story and wanted to catch the details I had missed.

The ending was not fully expected which I appreciate.

This was the first novel I have read by Forstchen and I am looking forward to trying another.

I will definitely buy more books narrated by Bronson Pinchot, I think he did a phenomenal job! At first I could just hear Balki but he did such a good job, it was easy to settle in and I enjoyed his narration very much. I enjoyed his accents and female voicing which is a big deal!

Fantastic book, makes you think.

Binged listed to this novel, the first I’ve read from this author. As a new parent, the story certainly hits home. Wouldn’t recommend listening late at night if you don’t want to stay awake for half the night dreaming about how you’d react to parts of it.

Excellent story. Poor narration

The narrator does not do a good job of bringing the story to life. Despite this you will overlook his short comings and continue to listen to learn what happens next. The story is strong enough to keep you listening.
