À propos de cet audio

Inspector Ian Rutledge investigates a possible attempted murder in this seasonal mystery novella from New York Times bestseller Charles Todd.

December 1921: Being single and a new Chief, Inspector Rutledge of Scotland Yard gets the short straw at Christmastime and is called upon by Chief Superintendent Markum to go to the Kentish home of a lord recovering from an attempt on his life. In bed with a concussion, the man is convinced someone is trying to kill him after he claims he was struck by the hoof of a running horse whose rider never stopped to check on him.

Struggling with his own demons from the war and misgivings about helping a man who, as a colonel, oversaw the suffering of those on the frontlines from afar, Rutledge undertakes an uneasy investigation. And as the winter holiday approaches, he becomes increasingly convinced that nothing is as it seems....

I’ve listened to, and thoroughly enjoyed, every one of the books in the Ian Rutledge series, even after Simon Prebble took over from Samuel Gillies who was the first narrator. In a short time, I became comfortable with the change. Both narrators portrayed Rutledge with gravitas and both were skilled in changing voices effectively to reflect different characters.

I find the present narrator is less able to convey Rutledge’s somber disposition, and he misses the fractiousness of Hamish’s presence almost entirely. Rutledge’s character needs a narrator who can capture his brooding nature. And as for providing other characters with appropriate voices, especially female characters, Steven Crossley is not good at this .

In addition, each book in the series was skillfully crafted, and captivating. But not this time. Unfortunately I find, the writing comes across as mediocre. The dialogue is stilted, and it feels as if the book was written in a hurry.

I was so looking forward to “A Christmas Witness” as it is the last book in this series. I fear if more Rutledge stories are to come, it might be a long wait.
