Description

Nestled in the hills of the Cotswolds, the village of Duntisbourne Abbots is a well-kept secret. When Joel Jennison is found slaughtered in the same field where his brother’s corpse had lain ten weeks previously, a whole community falls under suspicion. Was it a family feud? An act of revenge? As a forty-something woman with no previous experience of detective work, Thea Osborne knows she shouldn’t be getting involved but as she calls on her neighbours to get some answers, she uncovers more tragedy and intrigue that she thought possible behind the chocolate-box façade of a peaceful Gloucestershire village.

Just couldn’t like the main character

Good writing; good narration/performance; unlikeable main character.

Seriously. She is very selfish; it appears to be a core aspect of her personality, and she doesn’t even really clue in that there’s anything wrong! Her work ethic is abysmal, and not only as a result of her being so self-centred; she just doesn’t care about performing the duties that she’s said she will, and doesn’t care about the consequences, as long as SHE isn’t affected by them. Hmmnn… okay, maybe all of that IS solely owing to her being astronomically selfish. I could say more, but I don’t want to have any spoilers in here. (Although I can’t see very many people enjoying this book.)

Oh, wait. In all fairness, there IS one positive; the author does a very good job in helping the reader to understand the process of grieving. Don’t get the book because of that, though; buy a good grief-guide, if you’re looking to understand what a friend/relative is going through.
