Someone has been trying to poison the 15th Earl of Lislelivet. Since Lord Lislelivet has a gift for making enemies, no one - particularly his wife - finds this too surprising. What is surprising is that the poison was discovered in a fruitcake made and sold by the Handmaids of St. Lucy of Monkbury Abbey.

The powerful Lord complains loudly to the local bishop, who asks Father Max Tudor, vicar of Nether Monkslip and former MI5 agent, to investigate. Just as Max comes to believe the poisoning was accidental, a body is discovered in the cloister well. Can Max Tudor solve the case and restore order in time to attend his own nuptials?

ROTFLMAO: immediately after describing a character as sounding like an American Valley Girl, the narrator (Michael Page) procedes to sound nothing like one ;-P (Check out Zappa’s song “Valley Girl”, to hear his daughter Moon Unit’s great example of what a Valley Girl really sounded like [/sounds like, if Valley Girls still exist] :-) :-) :-) ) Kudos to him for performing an accent that is almost equal to a real American accent; most UK narrators don’t even approach a performance of Michael Page’s calibre. It’s just that Michael Page’s great attempt an American accent does NOT match that of a teenage girl from the San Fernando Valley of California. Accordingly, the Valley Girl character sounds absolutely hilarious; Valley Girl words spoken in a non-Valley Girl accent ;-) The author’s writing is excellent as usual, and their Cast of Characters list at the novel’s beginning as usual evokes the understated humour of the similar lists that begin Erle Stanley Gardner’s Perry Mason books :-)
