Description

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Pucked and A Lie for a Lie, a new stand-alone romance about trading favors, battling wills, and winning love.

When I joined Seattle's NHL expansion team, I thought it was the start of something great. But nothing ever goes the way you expect. Take my introduction to my new neighbor. She came rolling in on the hot mess express at midnight, making a racket while she tried to get into my team captain's apartment. Did I mention that he's married to a woman who definitely was not her?

Imagine my surprise when I end up with an injury that has me out of the game for weeks, and she's the one to offer to help me. I should probably add that she's not the captain's mistress. She's his sexy, pastel-haired younger sister.

So we come up with an arrangement: she rehabs me so that I can get back on the ice sooner, and she can add a professional athlete that isn't her brother to her client list. Seems simple enough. As long as I can keep my hands to myself and my hormones in check.

The Olive to Your Pineapple

I loved this book so much! I both read and listened to the audiobook. This enemies to friends to lovers romance hooked me right in and was just the kind of slow burn romance I was looking for. It's filled with all of Helena Hunting's trademark wit and humor and there were so many times I burst out laughing while reading and listening to this one. This is book 2 in the series, but it can be read as a standalone. Characters from the previous book do appear though, and that is where we originally meet the heroine, Stevie, so I do recommend reading A Lie for a Lie for maximum enjoyment.

Bishop is my favorite type of hero - loyal, caring, hilarious, supportive, truly an all around good guy wrapped in a grumpy, ornery, alpha package. I loved that he didn't have some crazy history of puck bunnies and that his main concern was always for his family. The back and forth with Stevie was the best and their innuendo and banter only ramped up the anticipation. What I appreciated most though, was that Bishop listened. I really felt for Stevie and understood why she made the decisions that she did to try to escape from the shadows. Sure it was frustrating at times and I thought she was a little dense to Bishop's actions, but at the same time I can see how confusing it all could be given her history and the start of their friendship. I was disappointed to see Rook act the way he did after falling for him in book 1, but as a younger sister myself, I can see that his heart was in the right place. I enjoyed seeing Alex and Violet from the Pucked series again, but it's Kingston who has definitely piqued my interest (who wouldn't love a well mannered gentleman who drinks milk at the bar!?) I really wouldn't be upset at all if he ends up getting his own book. ;)

The casting of Erin Mallon and Jacob Morgan was fantastic. Both can perform male and female characters so well and they also deliver on all the feels. Their comedic timing is perfect for the lighter moments, but they also can convey so much emotion with the inflections of their voices. This is an amazing narrating duo and I definitely recommend enjoying this one on audio if you have the chance.

Another winner narrated by 2 of my favs, score!

My Spoiler Free Review

I have been hoping for the past few weeks to reread Stevie and Bishop's fall into love story via my Kindle copy so I could highlight my favorite moments since I originally finished reading the audiobook format. Alas, the time to do a Kindle (re)read just hasn't been there and isn't likely to magically become available with all the activities I have on my calendar for February and March. Insert Big. Long. Sigh. Here.

What I loved most about this sports romance novel…
Page-turner / Absorbing listen | Wonderful characters | Realistic | Entertaining | Romantic | Funny | an awesome Read-Along hosted by the author | Easy-to-read / listen-to | Steamy | Happily Ever After

Format read: Unabridged Audiobook (Audible retailer)

Writing style: Dual POVs (Stevie's and Bishop's)

Cover and chapter design gush: I like these colors and the overall style of the cover. I also love the chapter titles that gave us a hint of what was coming the reader's way.

Ratings
Overall ★★★★★

Performances ★★★★★ My ears grinned in delight when I saw that two of my favorite narrators would be pulling me into this hockey romance. Erin Mallon and Zachary Webber never fail to deliver their A-level vocal acting. I always look forward to audiobooks narrated by either of them, so having the two of them cast was extra exciting.

Story ★★★★★
What else can I say that I haven't said before about a Helena Hunting novel? She consistently writes characters that I enjoy living inside of with each new novel.

Stevie and Bishop were interesting leads and the secondary characters in their lives were intriguing friends / family members that round out their lives so well. They had a rocky start / first face-to-face encounter but built from there in a realistic and entertaining way that made this one an early 2020 romance read.

Must Listen!

I love this series! These characters keep drawing me in from beginning to end! I love that I can cheer these couples on through their whole story. Neither of them lose their minds or act like idiots to cause extra drama.

The narration is perfect. Erin Mallon and Jacob Morgan are two of my favorites. They really become the characters and bring all the emotion of the story through.

So close...

This book was soooo soooo sooo close to being great. I hold Helena Hunting to a higher standing. If this wasn’t by her hell it might be 5 star. I know that her books are going to be an absolute ton of fun with some serious well thought out characters with some unique neuroses.

And this book has that, it is super fun and enjoyable and I’m smiling and adoring this book.... and then it randomly hit the fast forward button and skipped like 12 steps.

Alright so spoilers...

I’ve never read a book where the main character yells out he loves the girl and went “WAIT WHAT?!” He had barely admitted he kinda sorta liked her!!! They had 1 date and then were exposed to the world and now he’s telling her brother he loves her?! Like where did that come from? They had their first kiss 6 days before and then they didn’t talk for FIVE! I mean I know they were doing PT for like 5 weeks (I am assuming 5 cuz original timeline said 6 weeks to be back on the ice and she got him back a week early) but they didn’t like each other for most of the 5 weeks. They’ve had 2 serious convos 2 make out sessions and sex once.

Now I’m never an insta love fan BUT even when Hunting does Insta loves they tend to feel real. I like that a lot of times she ends with her characters happy and dating. Bishop and Stevie are not the couple that you have to fast forward to love, marriage, and house buying. She’s 24 just got out of a relationship. He’s an emotionally stunted awkward man who hates people. You don’t have to have them get married for readers to be happy. I liked this book so much and then boom dance, sex, media blitz, fight with brother and coach, confrontation with ex, talk with besties, sis talk with brother, love, house, proposal. All in the last hour.

I also might be a little disappointed because I loved RJ and Lainey’s story so much but I kinda wanted to punch RJ in the face in this book. It felt super weird. Maybe if a better reason was given to why RJ and Bishop didn’t like each other to begin with I might have bought the conflict more.

That being said. I still enjoyed this book a lot. A slightly subpar Helena Hunting book is still tons better than a regular romance novel. I’m still very glad I spent a day listening to this.

And as per usual Erin Mallon and Jacob Morgan are awesome. I like it when Jacob gets to do more comedy roles which is def Hunting style.

I wrote this on my phone less than 10 min after finishing the book. I maintain the right to change my mind and I totally own the utter lack of commas.

Good book

I loved this book. I laughed several times out loud, the crazy innuendos were so funny, it reminded me of someone I used to know. I also, liked that it was only sexually graphic the one time. I have read other books that sounds more like something in Penthouse Forum, after awhile, I skip the sex & just read the " oohs, ahs & OMG, your so great." This was a really good book.

Tear-jerkingly funny

This book is tear-jerkingly funny, I laughed so hard, I embarrassed myself, and had to put it down in public.
It’s a must-read; Stevie is the best, she is one of a kind, this book has sexiness, sparks and hockey perfection.

Even more delectable

This book was pure delight when I read it. But now having listened to Jacob Morgan in the role of Bishop, it’s rocked my world. He was the perfect voice for this book and Erin Mallon has just the sweetness Stevie exudes. It has the humour Helena Hunting has made us used to. This story is sexy, tender, funny. All the goods!

Holy Hockey Pucks of Hotness!

Holy hockey pucks, ladies & gents! I am really enjoying this series so far. Wonderful performances & the slow build of enemies to lovers with plenty of snarky underwear wars with hockey player hotness. This is the perfect read for people who love strong characters who are flawed, make mistakes and eventually learn from them while building real relationships - albeit rocky and messy. Erin Jacob are 2 of my favorite narrators with good reason. Excellent performances in this audiobook that brings out all of the cockiness, snark, flirtatious banter, heated near misses, and eventually electric attraction and undeniable love. I definitely recommend this one!

Love and don’t love

Okay. While I absolutely love this story, I don’t. I love Bishop with my whole heart. Stevie kinda love. Rook and Alex and King? Not so much. I didn’t think anyone treated Bishop very nicely or fairly. I didn’t like that he didn’t get enough credit or kindness or a wrap up at the end. So while I love the story, I wish it would’ve been wrapped up differently. As far as the narrators: Jacob is perfection. Absolute sexy perfection. Erin is good when she’s doing a woman’s voice. Her male voice gives me the heebies. I can’t dislike it enough. It’s hard when the text says deep voice and she sounds like a pubescent boy squeaking. I just read the book to avoid it and then listened to only Bishop’s chapters to finish the audio. I feel terrible saying that. She absolute perfection as a female voice though. But goodness Jacob does it perfectly as male and female voices.
