Description

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of A Fever of the Blood by Oscar De Muriel, read by Andy Secombe.

New Year's Day, 1889. In Edinburgh's lunatic asylum, a patient escapes as a nurse lies dying. Leading the manhunt are legendary local detective 'Nine-Nails' McGray and Londoner-in-exile Inspector Ian Frey. Before the murder, the suspect was heard in whispered conversation with a fellow patient - a girl who had been mute for years. What made her suddenly break her silence? And why won't she talk again? Could the rumours about black magic be more than superstition?

McGray and Frey track a devious psychopath far beyond their jurisdiction, through the worst blizzard in living memory, into the shadow of Pendle Hill - home of the Lancashire witches - where unimaginable danger awaits....

A Fever of the Blood includes an exclusive interview with the author which is available only to audiobook listeners.

great

I was really busy today, so for my daily book I decided to give this one a second listen. I had actually meant to listen to the first book in the series, but I picked the wrong one and just went with it.
I love this series. They are clever and funny and the mysteries are pleasantly weird. It's like The X-Files, but Victorian, with a snobby Englishman as the skeptic and an enormous Scotsman in flashy trousers as the believer.
A Fever of the Blood focused on a mystery directly related to MacGrey and his family, and it gave some insight into the character and kept the subplot regarding his sister moving.
The witch plot was a lot of fun.
A thoroughly entertaining listen. And listening is the way to go with this series, because the narrator is amazing. It adds so much to the experience. Both leads are voiced perfectly. MacGrey even sounds huge, and Frey sounds exactly as you'd expect a self-pitying upper class snob to sound. Just great.
