Megan Sinclair did not have a horrible marriage to Laird Robin Sinclair, but it was not as satisfying as she had hoped it would be on their wedding day. A letter arrives at the Mackenzie clan with information that will change Gregory's life. Years ago, he and Robert Sinclair had made a vow that if one of them died, leaving a widow, the other man, if still unwed, would marry her and protect her.
Unaware of the plan that Robert's uncle has for Megan, Gregory makes the trip to fetch his new wife, who is essentially being held prisoner.
