Description

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes the next novel in her Blood and Ash series....

Is Love Stronger Than Vengeance?

A Betrayal...

Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. The Dark One. The Prince of Atlantia. He wants her to fight him, and that’s one order she’s more than happy to obey. He may have taken her, but he will never have her.

A Choice...

Casteel Da’Neer is known by many names and many faces. His lies are as seductive as his touch. His truths as sensual as his bite. Poppy knows better than to trust him. He needs her alive, healthy, and whole to achieve his goals. But he’s the only way for her to get what she wants - to find her brother Ian and see for herself if he has become a soulless Ascended. Working with Casteel instead of against him presents its own risks. He still tempts her with every breath, offering up all she’s ever wanted. Casteel has plans for her. Ones that could expose her to unimaginable pleasure and unfathomable pain. Plans that will force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself - about him. Plans that could bind their lives together in unexpected ways that neither kingdom is prepared for. And she’s far too reckless, too hungry, to resist the temptation.

A Secret...

But unrest has grown in Atlantia as they await the return of their Prince. Whispers of war have become stronger, and Poppy is at the very heart of it all. The King wants to use her to send a message. The Descenters want her dead. The wolven are growing more unpredictable. And as her abilities to feel pain and emotion begin to grow and strengthen, the Atlantians start to fear her. Dark secrets are at play, ones steeped in the blood-drenched sins of two kingdoms that would do anything to keep the truth hidden. But when the earth begins to shake, and the skies start to bleed, it may already be too late.

Like really bad fanfic

Oh my word, I don't even know where to begin. This book made me so friggin mad! I will try to keep this in chronological order, like the issues I had as they came up. First though, I liked the narrator. She put a lot of effort into making sure every character sounded different and memorable. I like her. *THERE WILL BE SOME SPOILERS* Okay, so it picks up right where it left off in Blood and Ash. 👌🏻 cool. Things progress. Slowly. So damn slowly. First thing that really drove me crazy was how contemporary the dialog was. The first one wasn't so bad, it was contemporary enough that it wasn't like slogging through mud but this was, it was like I was in high school? The sarcasm was laid on WAY too thick. Like, there's no need to have EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER be sarcastic and witty and need to have the last word. Like I have never rolled my eyes so much. Next big piece of madness here: the SEX. I felt like I was reading 50 Shades of Grey 🤢 It's everywhere and it's too damn much! like too much! Everytime they're alone, BAM. Every chance he got to touch her, its was sexually. I SKIPPED PARTS!! I never do that! It got so predictable and it lost its shine. Like give it a break Armentrout! Where's the build up, where's the antici- Next! Speaking about the sex. As someone who has been pressured sexually, I didn't appreciate that that was such a prominent story line. Every time she said, "no don't", he 'sensed her desire' and that suddenly made it okay. I hated that. Like gross!! It's way too possessive and I didn't enjoy Hawke as a possessive person in the first one. His complete change of character was unwanted. Yes, there's something to said about having to be a little different when he was her Royal Guard. Another thing to have a personality 180 degrees from the one I just fell in love with and not in a good way! Onto the next, repetitiveness. She says "there's something seriously wrong with you" and variations of that so many times. Like the description of his eyes got beat to death and then some. It doesn't help that she has like 30 min long monologs about stuff. Now, usually, that's not a problem. Usually, you want more inner dialog so you can understand more. This case, however, I was telling her to shut up so often. So I mentioned, I rolled my eyes ALOT. Yeah, so much of this friggin book was predictable. Like, cheesy not good kind. I can't name every single time that happened but I'll tell you, it happened every chapter. Kinda like the sex did....it was awful. I realize that if you read a certain genre a lot, you get good at guessing where the twists and turns are gonna go but there are LOTS of books that manage to still throw in surprises. Like, I don't think there was a single moment in this book that surprised or shocked me. ESPECIALLY the end. Of friggin course she's the last descendant of the king of gods. Like, OF COURSE. 🙄🙄🙄 I was so incredibly disappointed with this book. I hear there's a third and honestly, I might just ask a friend how it ends so save myself the wasted hours listening to it. -pation.

This book dragged on

Well preformed, the the story dragged on with romance scenes and little plot progression. It was brutal to listen to for 24 hours.

Good story line, a little draggy

Omg that ending, I need more! The storyline of this book is really good and the narration is easy to fall in love with. The only issue i have with it is that it drags a lot through like, the first half of the book. I didn't find anything really even happened until halfway through their travels, which just takes forever for the book to progress that far. A lot of inner monolog which is usually great but excessive here. I actually found myself skipping through a lot of the first 10 or so chapters at least because nothing was really happening. That being said though, once things do pick up further in the book, its worth the read!

Full of fillers

Lovely writing , as I would expect. what I didn’t expect was wanting to skip chapters. All in all , decent story . Have to read it to get to the next . The narrator was just as silly as the first book!

What a cliff hanger !

I found that the book dragged a little at first , and Poppy got a little annoying with her childish remarks and her bratty behaviour, but once it picked up good lord I couldn’t stop listening! The book is really repetitive in some aspects, like her constantly saying somethings wrong with Casteel, but other then that it’s a fantastic book! I’m a sucker for a blossoming romance and I can hardly wait for the next one!

Good... but way too much sex

I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 3 only because the storyline is good... but damn, she could have cut about four hours off the run time without the repetitive and overly detailed sex scenes. I don't mind a couple steamy scenes like we had in the first book, but when there are well over half a dozen and each one uses the exact same language over and over, you can just go with "..." and we all get the point. I started skipping them halfway through so I didn't have to listen to the narrator talk about "her very core" or "that bundle of nerves" one more time.

This series owns my soul

I've been living in this series for an entire week, Jennifer Armentrout was able to transport me into the book. I felt everything. Also, my heart dropped at the end. I felt so many emotions that Poppy (the main character) wouldn't be able to process them herself. I'll just be dying until the next book comes out in 2021. Also, the narrator? Beautiful. Stina Nielsen is amazing.

Best sequal to a series i've read in a long while

Everything good from the first book turned up to eleven. It's not perfect , no book can ever be perfect for everyone, but it definitely hits all of it's best qualities and expands on them. The chemistry between Cas and Poppy is beyond good i don't know if it's the writing , the narrator, or both but every time they were together every thing was awesome, and when they weren't together i actually missed their banter. I have not always been a fan of this author's work. Teen drama being more grating for me than entertaining, but i think she hit a nice tone with this series. Still some relationship drama, but in a way that makes sense and is usually resolved with some good old fashioned communication. I admit with the way the last book ended i kind of expected this book to be more annoying than anything else. but nope it turned out great. Lol it was a superb distraction from the real world. the world building continues to be quite fascinating. The only thing i would really nitpick about, was that for a girl who wanted to be an independent warrior type she spends almost no time training. and a LOT of time alone fretting about Cas's feelings while he actually did Princely stuff. Felt a bit Disney princess..ish, likes to talk about being all important and stuff but is never actually shown doing more than worrying about whether their prince REALLY loves them or not. Also i really really REALLY want the next book, cliffhangers are not fair, and those who use them are sadistic sociopaths. lol

Wow, a lot of sex

I read the first of this series and really enjoyed it. I was excited when this came out, but I haven't been able to finish it. I didn't expect so much sex. I don't even mind sex scenes in books. There was sex in the first one, but this one feels like every other scene is a very detailed sex scene. It's just boring. Also, I feel like the plot could've gone a lot farther with this interesting world they've set up, but instead you're kinda stuck around towns or castles while the main character whines about loving or not loving what's his face, or over thinking everything

Entertaining but tiring

I love fantasy romance and often get quite attached to the characters. The first book was very entertaining, but man this second book has been so excessively detailed and repetitive that I won’t have any issues detaching to the story when it’s over, I’m ready for it. The fact that we all know what’s going to happen and know Penelope’s true feelings LONG before she comes to the realization is tiringggg. And her violent tendencies are verging sociopathy lol...🤷‍♀️

Best series ever!

The cliffhanger is killing me! I can't wait for book 3 to be released. It had the right amount of adventure, romantic tension and sex. The only annoyance is that Poppy can get lost in her thoughts, which can be a tad bit annoying.

A little disappointed

Overall I like this book/series, but I was somewhat disappointed. Poppy drove me up the wall for most of this book. On one hand her brattyness and endless whiney internal monologue of boo hoo, he's done bad things in his dark and stormy past. On the other, gasp! He's so pretty! Nevermind about whatever legitimate concern we were discussing, such as that pesky kidnapping and forced marriage issue. It did pick up in the second half, and I was quite enjoying it. Then the cliffhanger ending was awfully anticlimactic. I probably would have waited to read this until book three came out if I had known.
