In the wake of the Civil War, Henry James wrote A Most Extraordinary Case, a poignant exploration of the emotional turmoil his brother Wilkie experienced.

The story introduces us to Ferdinand Mason, a sickly Civil War veteran who finds himself alone in a rundown hotel, overlooked and forgotten, despite his acts of valor for his country. His situation changes when his aunt arrives, determined to nurse him back to health in her comfortable home by the Hudson River.

In the events that followed, he would meet the beautiful and alluring Caroline also staying with his aunt. Is Ferdinand strong enough to face the dangers not of war this time, but of romance?
