Description

Can a priest, his brother, and the brother's girlfriend solve a murder case and see justice done - or will they be the murderer's latest victim? A Murder on Wall Street takes us inside the world of Captain O'Brian's Irish Pub and Cigar Bar in Manhattan, a legendary hotspot in the Financial District. Investigating the death are pub owners Joey Mancuso, fired from the New York Police Department for his unorthodox methods, and his brother Father Dominic, who isn't your typical priest. Also investigating is Marcy Martinez, a Cuban bombshell and FBI agent who is Joey's girlfriend.

When a customer kills himself after celebrating the night before, the three know something's wrong. Turns out, the customer's death coincides with people losing money - lots of it - and some of those people are very, very dangerous.

Fun Listen!

Twisty, layered, and a bit tongue in cheek. Black hats and white hats, the former pretty bad and the latter pretty decent. A fun romp! Definitely not meant to be taken overly seriously, which is great if you’re looking for a light and entertaining read. Narrator did a great job! I’ll be listening to the next instalment soon.

Not Great

The crime in this old-school mystery offering (the murder - made to look like a suicide - of an Investment Firm executive) is sufficiently clever and loaded with enough suspects to keep readers/listeners guessing. Unfortunately, it's not a terribly original murder (pushed out a highrise window), there are actually several murders and crimes uncovered (too many, in fact), and the execution of the plot is subpar: proceeding at a confusing & disappointing breakneck pace. Additionally, description is sketched out, Owen Parr's dialogue is stilted (machine-gun staccato question-answers with too-frequent "witty" banter/sexual innuendo interjections), and the motivations for this unusual team of sleuths for getting involved in the case are never made clear. Besides, an Irish-Italian bar-owning ex-NYPD Detective, his Catholic Priest/P.I. half-brother, and a ridiculously beautiful large-breasted Cuban-American FBI Agent is an eyerollingly cliché-burdened investigative team in the first place. It's a bit hard to swallow.

Likewise unfortunate, the usually great reader Stefan Rudnicki inadvertently contributes to the "Meh" quality of this audiobook. His diction, cadence, rate of reading, and tone are typically spot-on - and I could listen to Rudnicki's baritone timbre for days - but getting him to read Spanish and Latin are a bridge too far. Parr also asks the narrator to read stereotypical New-Yawk Italian accents and Irish Brogues - and ethnic voice-acting is Rudnicki's kryptonite. Altogether, the performance is "adequate".

In toto, 'A Murder On Wall Street' rates 4 stars out of 10. Even offered as a 'Plus' selection.. you could find better ways to spend your time
..and if they ask for a Credit, you would be crazy to spend it.
