Absolute Favourite
My sister recommended this as a fun, light audio book. Don't be fooled by the fun and light, Brennan's characters are rich and memorable and the adventure was fantastic. Kate Readings performance is one of the best I've ever seen. This book made laugh and cry, the ending was not rich and sorrowful. I eagerly started the next in the series.

Engaging but flawed - would still recommend!
I liked the "no nonsense" style of the first person narrator. Once the story kicks off the prose really works well, but I was a bit worried until then because Without the "adventure" it started a bit dry. Overall I really felt a sense of escape & adventure. the world building and cultural backdrops were an interesting twist on the "Victorian"-type era.
Avoiding spoilers, there were some plot points towards the end that didn't land right for me, and I'd have to spoil to elaborate. I think the issue is that the story is written "by" the main character in first person, and therefore EVERYTHING they choose to use as a plot device should be believable if written by that character. You'll understand if you read it, but some things just didn't sit right in that regard – it felt like the IRL author used that plot device, but the character never would.
All in all, if the premise seems enticing to you, I'd recommend it! I'll definitely continue the series.

Great book
Really enjoyed this book. the pace and story were good. very much the flvour of a grand Victorian adventure
