Description

New York Times best seller

The heart-wrenching, uplifting tale about a woman named Cupcake

“[Cupcake] Brown’s confessional...memoir is one you can’t easily put down. Her life is nothing short of a miracle.” (Chicago Sun-Times)

There are shelves of memoirs about overcoming the death of a parent, childhood abuse, rape, drug addiction, miscarriage, alcoholism, hustling, gangbanging, near-death injuries, drug dealing, prostitution, and homelessness.

Cupcake Brown survived all these things before she’d even turned 20. And that’s when things got interesting....Orphaned by the death of her mother and left in the hands of a sadistic foster parent, young Cupcake Brown learned to survive by turning tricks, downing hard liquor, and ingesting every drug she could find while hitchhiking up and down the California coast. She stumbled into gangbanging, drug dealing, hustling, prostitution, theft, and, eventually, the best scam of all: a series of 9-to-5 jobs.

A Piece of Cake is unlike any memoir you’ll ever read. Moving in its frankness, this is the most satisfying, startlingly funny, and genuinely affecting tour through hell you’ll ever take.

Praise for A Piece of Cake

“[Brown] reflects now with insight and honesty on her experiences....An engaging account...of a remarkable life filled with pain and wisdom, hope and redemption.” (San Francisco Chronicle

“Dazzles you with the amazing change that is possible in one lifetime.” (Washington Post)

Incredible Story

It's hard to believe this is true and that anyone had to endure such a hard go at life. I have the hard copy but this edition has more details and I have recommended to all my friends. There are parts that make you cringe, cry and laugh. I have never read a book like this in my life.
Thank you Cupcake for sharing your story!

Just my take

I’ve read this book twice now the short version was the first time And I loved it some years
Later which is now I purchased again thru audible but did the long version and again I loved it mostly until the last maybe 2 maybe 3
Chapters I found them to be too
Much about god and a little exaggerated and some stuff seemed a little unbelievable but overall I still enjoyed it

Outstanding

This is a remarkable story. Tragic and inspiring, I am so glad Cupcake Brown wrote it. Bahni Turpin brought it to life with her exceptional narration.

Witty and inspiring

Great book about how addiction can destroy you and how you can overcome this predicament. Very inspiring and with numerous excellent humorous parts. Plus I like the way how Bahni Turpin reads the book.

Still Listening !!!!!!!!

I am an audio book addict. And I often, even after using my four credits a month because I have two accounts, run out of books. A Piece of Cake is my tried and true fill-in. I have listened to this book 4 times, and I still find myself laughing and crying just like I have never heard the book in the past. This book is a wonderful listen and a true classic. I have even purchased the book for several friends as gifts (only two other audio books have moved me to do this - The Teahouse Fire and Somebody Knows My Name). For me, this book feels like a good movie, and the time goes by so fast that you still want more. Not that it's unfulfilling; you will just want the sequel! Bahni Turpin is my absolute favorite narrator. The main character comes to life in your heart in the first 5 minutes of the book, and you feel the connection long after the book ends. You will not be disappointed with this audio; it is well worth the credit.

Religious

Imagine my disappointment when the book turned into religous propaganda at the last part.
I loved the book and Cupcake the first 14 hours (or thereabout), but then the last 7 hours she tried to convince me it was god who saved her.

Why would a person go through all this and at the end be thanking god? I truly do not understand it.

Would have gotten a five star all the way without the religious crap.

Audible: You need to let people know about the religious content in the description of the book. I'm an atheist, and I have wasted a LOT of money in here on books who turned out to be filled with god this and god that.

Amazing , Brutal, Inspiring

Let me start by saying the narrator is by far the best I've heard - it's hard to believe she isn't the author - it sounded like she was speaking from personal knowledge of each and every event of this gripping life story. Every bit of this amazing true account of the author's journey from happy child, to victim of abuse and circumstance, delinquency and drugs, crime and chaos, then rebirth and final triumph, overwhelmed me with emotion and awe. The writing is brutal and graphic at times - but the images the author paints ring so true that the shock of profanity or vulgarity are not even worth fixating on. The lowest of lows make the ascent to success and triumph that much more uplifting and inspiring for the reader. I loved this book - I love the message - I applaud Cupcake Brown for all that she has been become.

The best book I've ever listened to

I can't say enough positive things about this book.

Cupcake Brown's story is one I'll never forget. It's hard-core honest. For me, the brutality was sometimes hard to listen to (I had to take a lot of breaks in the beginning). The things she went through, no child should ever have to endure.

I totally enjoyed her style of writing. Cupcake's sense of humor tickled me. As flawed and tragic as she was, many of her antics throughout the book made me scream with laughter. Redemption comes at the end, and I cried like a baby.

The narrator, Bahni Turpin, is very expressive and she did this story incredible justice. She performed it to a "T".

This book is well worth 2 credits and in fact, I'm going to purchase it in print.

If you like memoirs, and cussing doesn't offend you too much, this is a keeper.

Great Reader!

Would you try another book from Cupcake Brown and/or Bahni Turpin?

I love Bahni and look for books narrated by her

If you’ve listened to books by Cupcake Brown before, how does this one compare?

Any additional comments?

This was really just ok for me. Started out really interesting, but towards the middle became monotonous, and I struggled to finish. Bahni Turpin as always gave a wonderful performance and I am pretty sure what kept me from just hanging up halfway through. I do respect the author, and feel for what she went through- but there is no mention of what she did FOR others once she overcame her difficulties. THAT would have been more extraordinary for me to hear.

How could she remember all this if she was always loaded??

Although this book gave a good insight into the life and recovery of an addict and someone who fell on hard times unfortunately this book didn't do much for me personally.
The only part I found inspiring was after Cupcake kicked the drugs and got clean and even then sometimes I found the parts where she used self deprecating humour to be unfunny and hard to believe.
As my header says I find it hard to believe someone who was constantly loaded and suffered blackouts would remember so much especially in instances when she was on her own.
Bahni Turpin did as a good a performance as could be expected give the lengthy book the content.

First Step

I think it's completely possible to live a life of extreme abuse, neglect and addiction, and not survive to be a great writer. Kudos to Cupcake for her journey to sobriety - she is clearly a person of tremendous inner strength - but the outcome of her writing is repetitive and hard to get through. This seems a bit odd, because the events themselves are pretty outrageous, so I guess the problem could be the writing style. The book reads like an expanded first step (of the famous 12), with exhaustive recounts of the rape, crime, beatings, loss, and excessive quantities of drugs and alcohol, endless missed opportunities for change, and the, FINALLY, minutiae of recovery, all using the same 3 adjectives. Perhaps it should be a required listen for people new to recovery, but as a memoir it's not so compelling. I found the book by searching for Bahni Turpin, since she was such an excellent narrator in The Help, and she did try to enliven the "negative behaviors" and events of Cupcake's life, but it still doesn't work for me.

Remarkable book

This book is such a greatly written book and so amazing. I loved the narrator for this read Bahni Turpin brought this book to life. I found myself upset, happy, sad and every emotion that you could have. While listening to this book I was like how can this girls life get any better and the ending amazed me. Wonders never cease. I never expected so much to go on in someones life but one thing I can say this young woman's story was by far one of the best that I have come across.

I Wanted MORE!!!

This was one of those books that you don't want to end. Cupcake Brown is a remarkable woman with an AMAZING story! I had not heard her story before I read the book. Her story so intrigued me that I did additional research on the web to follow up on her success post the completion of the book. I would HIGHLY recommend all young women to read!
