Description

Debuted and currently #4 on the New York Times audio bestseller list!

Fifty-something David Spade is letting it all hang out. Older (yes), wiser (debatable), in A Polaroid Guy in a Snapchat World, the actor, comedian, and SNL alum reflects on his life then and now through a series of candid and hysterical (and occasionally cringe-worthy) takes on everything from why it’s getting harder to date younger women, to what it’s like being a dad now, to suddenly being the “old guy” on set.

Whether he’s musing on the alarming ease of breaking up over text (he’s done it), feuding with a teenage Internet celebrity (spoiler alert, he lost), or dealing with the friend from high school who became his full-time plus-one, when the star of Joe Dirt and Just Shoot Me unleashes his biting wit and dirty mind on the general freakiness of middle-age, he’s in a league of his own (not to be confused with A League of Their Own).

Written and performed for the Audible experience, Spade’s new comic memoir takes listeners along for the sometimes embarrassing and always hilarious ride of getting older in our fleeting “Snapchat World”.

Defending jokes before you make them kills it...

I'm writing this to Spade, you can read it too. Look, I really wanted to give this 5 stars, you really put yourself out there, got deep into yourself, it really made me appreciate some of your earlier roles. I'm a huge PCU fan, I've been watching you forever, and I'm able to appreciate your portrayal of certain characters while separating the fact that I might not like that character. That being said, I'm not some 'snowflake' who's easily 'triggered,' but Spade, you talk about how Trump jokes are just cheap shots, easy laughs, and that you don't like doing them. Then you had to do the stupid old guy thing and start making fun of gender identity, and I get that people feel the need to defend their right to make certain kinds of jokes about marginalized people, I can laugh at one or two if they're well thought out (you can make a joke about a touchy subject without berating people, at least I can when I'm on stage) but like most people who wast parts of their set defending their rights, the jokes that follow are pretty weak, and only made weaker by the argument of defense preceding them. Then you drop Chris Rock's name when saying he's your litmus test to see what kinds of jokes you can make about people who look more like Chris, and less like you... You live in Hollywood, there are transgender people everywhere, there are people with other gender identities everywhere, go make some new friends to help you navigate those waters. For the record, there were plenty of famous people named Caitlyn (various spellings) born between the 1920's-1960's, and for some people picking their new name is a really hard thing to do. She's a Transgender Republican, common dude, there's an ocean of material that's objectively hilarious, and you nitpicked at that nonsense. I really wanna recommend this, and I get that comedians being censored stifles an art form, but if you're going to make a weak joke for the sake of exerting your right to make it, when you could have knocked it out of the park, I'm not going to be shy. That being said, the rest of the book was really awesome, and though I'm just some random reviewer on the internet you'll probably ignore, but I wish I could leave you contact info, because I've got some GREAT jokes about Jenner that will make Trans/Non-Binary people love you for making them, I can totally get you a new, emerging/rapidly expanding demographic. IF you do read this and you're interested for whatever reason, post a photo of a baby elephant on IG and I'll figure out a way to connect. Sorry your Dad sucked, thanks for the laughs, and GRRRRRRRR WHY DID YOU HAVE TO PUT ME IN THE POSITION WHERE I COULDN'T GIVE YOU THE AWESOME REVIEW YOUR BOOK DESERVES!!! DARN IT SPADE!!!

Loved It

David Spade is not for everyone, but those that appreciate his special brand of sarcastic humour will love this book. Unlike scripted audiobooks, Spade spins tales like he's having a conversation over a beer. It makes for a relaxing, sometimes hilarious listen.

Super funny

My first audiobook experience and it was amazing! Autobiography with lots of different topics, always with a comedic twist. Isn’t afraid to break the fourth wall and makes his own sound effects to keep reader engaged. Great listen, especially to keep you calm in traffic. Highly, highly, highly recommend! P.s. gets a little raunchy and personal

Much better than the first one!

This book is such a good listen for when you’re running errands, driving your car to work, or simple things like that.
As David mentioned, it doesn’t add anything to your life, but it’s entertaining and light to listen to.
I find myself looking forward to head to the car for work just so I can listen to it.

Free on Spotify

I love Spade. Saw him with Dennis Miller a few months ago. But this "book" is virtually his entire 2014 album, which is available on Spotify. Don't waste a credit.

Cynical humor at its best!

If you are a Spade fan, or even if you’re not, this book is a witty take on life as it was and is now. As a 40 something woman, I appreciated the nostalgic SNL and Farley references, as well as the more poignant moments of Spade’s upbringing and early years. His sarcasm and cynicism are the perfect pair as he describes the many hilarious moments of his life as a “star”. While a bit raunchy at times, this book is worth the price and the listen. It’s laugh out loud funny in a world where we don’t laugh nearly enough. Thanks David Spade!!

Funny; some parts were gross though

This was entertaining but he kind of gets a little gross in parts(the porno parts). Could've done without that. But other than that. it was a hoot.

Laugh out loud hilarious

A great performance of a story that is both funny and touching by a guy who far more decent and thoughtful than his public persona.

In my 20s, but still love it...

A lot of this book is geared at relating more towards those who aren't growing up in this "social media world". However, I'm in my twenties, and I grew up loving David Spade's comedy, so I wanted to give it a try anyway. I am so glad I did. There was a lot that was still very relatable. He's an amazing story teller in this. 6 hours flew by like it was nothing. I don't laugh out loud at much, but I really did at this, making myself look like a complete idiot many times. I would listen to him ramble like he did in this book for hours more! There are definitely some raunchy parts, but still hilarious. Such a well thought through look at his life.

Spade Succeeds in Spades

Lots of great comics out there- add a voracious online appetite that will swallow 10 years of material in a 45 min. spot, and you have near impossible odds of establishing a long term relationship with a loyal audience. Some have done it, always with a unique personality- able to overcome tarnishing time with its constantly new and shifting difficulty levels....
Lenny Bruce, Jerry Lewis, Carlin, Pryor, Dangerfield-modern comics at least have the shoulders of Giants to start off on-
Bill Hicks, Kennison, Hedberg, Louis CK, Chappell, Chris Rock....again, even given the amazing content, it’s the unique personalities that make for a lifetime friend-
And there you have the story and glory of Davie Spade- Trusting in his own personality to be his ‘character’, it’s clear that this shy and tentative person is never taking any chances by self deprecation, or self shaming; he’s got the room at Hello-
David is Everyman’s go-to hang partner. Like Gaffigan , Tom Papa, and (on a good day) Artie Lang, he can go for a couple hours and never approach a worn out welcome- He’s a welcome guest and a truly trusted comic- he’ll be around as long as he wants to be.

Hilarious...

I was laughing so much I think my coworkers in the near by cubicles thought I was crazy. I loved that David Spade narrated the story. You can get his sense of humor. The book was about random life topics sometimes comparing the old way of life versus the new technological era. Super funny!
