This writer gets to the essence of everyday life "she spread her butter on the spongy bread". Her words are almost poetry, her ability to describe emotions is phenomenal. The story line keeps you reading to discover the fate of each character and to find out were the fortune is hidden. I really enjoyed this book.

Filled with intrique, strong protagonists with hearts hidden behind each of their individual hurts ---they peel like an onion...

Yes this is Christian historical fiction not correctly represented in the description. But no the spiritual elements are not jarring.
Having read plenty of CHF but not particularly looking for it at the moment, this book was a surprise that ended up redeeming the genre. The writing is superb and intricate but with simple themes. No cheese or melodrama in the romantic storyline. Perfect mix of historical context and romance with mystery and theology. And the narration was like a balm whenever I picked it up.
I don't often reread these quick reads but I think I'll come back to this one.
