Description

Aaron Envelar thought a sellsword's life was as dangerous as any life could be.

He was wrong.

Trapped in a conquered city with a reward on their heads, Aaron and his companions must find a way to elude the soldiers pursuing them while he struggles to understand his bond with Co, a magical creature of myth and the Virtue of Compassion. There is power within the bond, power that could help him protect his friends, if he's lucky enough to master it before the darkness within the bond consumes him.

But luck, Aaron knows, is a blade reached for in the dark, the man who grasps it as likely to bleed for his trouble as find the handle.

Stalked by Belgarin's soldiers, Aaron and his companions struggle to find allies before it's too late. But Belgarin's army is not the only danger they face, and even should they escape, even should Aaron master his bond with a legendary creature of magic, they may still fail. They may still die.

For there are other legends in the world, other magic. And not all legends are good ones. Not all magic is benign.

Awesomeness

Another great book in the series. Steven Brand is the best, and I'm looking forward to the next book.

It turned ugly.

The first book was at time unnecessarily violent, but this second revels in descriptions of pain and ugliness.

Great Adult Fantasy Fiction.

This series continues to impress. My only complaint would be a lack of vocal diversity. However, the reading is good enough it does not disappoint.

Too much rambling, too little plot movement

While I sensed some of the same problems I'm about to detail with book one, I was willing to give the next book a chance since I found the idea of magical virtue spirits novel and hoped that book 2 would focus more on moving that part of the story along. Regrettably, it had not and had seemed to move somewhat aimlessly for large sections of time.

The protagonist gets severely cut, stabbed, poisoned and shot with arrows yet somehow seems to recover enough within a few days allowing him to fight on and within a few days more, ready to get himself impaled, sliced and diced once again. This with Co only being able to dull the pain for a short period of time. This type of super-endurance is only found with the well-armored, magically enhanced healing or some type of super hero trait, none of which our protagonist possessed.

The author also seems to have a fetish with using the people's private parts for many of his bawdy metaphors which, while humorous when used judiciously, only makes his characters less interesting when overly used, this is especially true when the protagonist tends to favor using them.

Most disappointing was how the author decided to smother the protagonist with female companions who seemed mostly there to fret over his wounds after each fight encounter; the princess being the worst example of this.

I could only last for a bit over four hours before I could no longer continue.
