Description

Newly appointed police inspector Domenic Jejeune doesn't mind ruffling a few feathers. His success has elevated him into a poster boy for the police. The problem is Jejeune doesn't really want to be a detective at all; he much prefers watching birds.

Recently reassigned to the small Norfolk town of Saltmarsh, Jejeune's two worlds collide with the grisly murder of a prominent ecological activist. Jejeune must call on all his birding knowhow to solve the mystery and deal with unwelcome public acclaim, the mistrust of colleagues and his own insecurities. For in the case of the Saltmarsh birder murders, the victims may not be the only casualties....

Canada is not American!

I found the information about the hobby of birding more compelling as a part of this story. It was inciteful as to what peaks the interest of birdwatchers as a whole. I didn't mind the story itself but found myself having the same difficulties as the police officers in following the direction of the investigations but enjoyed it nonetheless. The biggest downfall was David Thorpe's narration. His English characters are excellent but as a bilingual Canadian, I found his Canadian accent absolutely atrocious and quite annoying, picking up Boston, New York and even California but definitely not any Canadian accent I've ever heard, The protagonist is French Canadian as well. Surely, there are enough resources of Canadians in film and politics, for him to have put some effort into the main character's elocution even if he wanted to make him an anglophone. Ryan Reynolds, Michael J Fox, Jim Carrey etc. all have worldwide fame. Yannick Bisson is the star of Murdoch Mysteries some fifteen seasons of which are available in the U.K. He is French Canadian who speaks English without a marked French accent as does the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also French Canadian. Very disappointed that the narrator would "phone it in" on the main character. Canada is not America just like Yorkshire is not Essex. The accent matters.

Fun mystery especially if you’re a birder

Cozy crime with great characters and fabulous bird and birding details. Lovely word smithing, but occasionally less than clear meaning - which I expect will improve with the second and so firth novels. Looking forward to reading the whole series.
