They asked, but too late. Who knows what might have happened if they accepted help sooner. That does seem to be a lesson learned though. The story of this tragedy does explore how military enemies come together in humanitarian missions when not at war. A good sense of what life was like on the Kursk, what the men probably went through, and the causes of the tragedy.
