AL:ICE: Captain Jacob Thomas USMC is a divorced combat veteran just trying to get his life back on track. I suspect this author may be mildly psychotic. “Like a high powered business man”.
It is as if the emotions of the characters where described to the writer by a four year old. “Happy, glad, sad, mad”. No complexed feeling or issues that come with normal human interaction. Also a very convenient solution to every problem that requires no effort to overcome by the characters. All solutions coming from “Alice” the super computer A.I.
No argument, this is an interesting premise with a lot of potential. But the story falls flat and is largely boring.
Note: I’m only listening to the first 2 books. Maybe the series gets better as it goes on.
I can’t be bothered to find out.

I found the story flowed fairly well and it has a good military futuristic dystopian vibe that with very little imagination could see happening

I started off listening to this, and at first, I was on board. However, it very quickly turned into an adolescent teen boys' wet dream. I continued listening for a while longer as I did like the premise behind the pseudo-science portions. Then, even that failed me. I won't discuss the details of the "science" that bothered me in case said 12 year old boy wants to read this, but if he is listening, go hug your Mom and speak to a therapist.

really enjoyable listen and love the unique societal norms that are constructed i.e. Jakes wives. in many ways this could have been a spicier book but the author wisely chose to focus on the space action instead of the physical romance. please listen to it I don't want to give any spoilers away.

I did make it through all the books. And could see the growth of the writer through it. Or maybe just the writer addressing criticisms from earlier books.
Narator is maybe a tad dramatic but it probably helped fill in some of the writers gaps.

I don’t see this as a typical book or story. I feel like the author had a day dream and just wrote it down. “If I ended up in the future after the world fell apart and was the only person with access to an AI and super tech. Then I would do this to restore the world. Then there might be this problem and I would solve it like this. And I would save everyone I care about and never lose” And repeat. Problem solution, win every time. Outcome is always better than what would be the best reasonably expected. Reminds me a lot of my teenage day dreams where I had super tech and solved the worlds problems. (Not including the harems)

About the love interests. Yes the male lead hooks up with many beautiful women. Yes they are described as naked. No there is no actual description of the acts. Like much of the things in this book. They just happen, don’t think to much about it or the story falls apart. But our good guy hero didn’t want the harem. But now can’t hurt their feelings. Only the first couple books actually have much about this. The rest of the time they are just there in the background and only there to provide a minimal personal tension.

But the physics of the world are way off the author acts like there is only one narrow path from earth to the edge of the solar system. And describes in atmo flight times that would be many times the speed of sound. But then suddenly gets excited that their new transportation is going to be faster than Mach 1. YOUVE BEED DOING THAT ALL ALONG.
Just don’t think about it.

Gave the story 3 stars because while very lean on content and simple in writing. It wasn’t some nasty foul or vulgar thing that would make me hate it. And hey. Now I have another daydream while waiting in the dmv

interesting premise. Poorly executed. Also, it turns into a weird juvenile sex fantasy.
The narrator does fairly well, however every sentence is pronounced like he's voicing a movie trailer.

Neat idea but a bit clunky.
The hero/harem thing got pretty old, pretty quickly.
It comes of almost unapologetically as a sci-fi schoolboy fantasy.
Fortunately, the 'interactions' aren't too explicit, I fear that would have jumped the shark.
Still fighting my way through.
Excellent narration given the content.

If you loved Battlefield Earth, either the book or the movie, you may think that this is gold. If you also really enjoy the voice of that guy that did 90's movies trailer voiceovers, you are going to be in heaven.

The writing had an interesting science fiction hook at the beginning, but it quickly devolved into harem literature, having a single male protagonist surrounded by many female characters that are all sexually interested in him. The descriptions of women are misogynistic, and frankly completely inappropriate.

I’m a woman who likes sci fi. It’s often written from a man’s perspective and I’m happy to hear different points of view. But this is misogynistic to the extreme. All of the characters are so shallow. Really alienating. It’s a shame, because the author is clearly talented.
