Description

One night and my life completely jumped the tracks. Actually, a pack of expired condoms did that - the rest of the night was pretty amazing. Open bar at a friend's wedding. Bad dancing all around. Stupid trivia bets with my fellow Ice Knights hockey teammates. And Tess Gardner. The factoid-blurting, fandom-T-shirt-wearing, no-I-don’t-want-a-relationship-with-you woman makes me forget for one night that I’m a man with a routine and my future all mapped out. Still, it sucked she left our room without giving me her number.

Fast-forward to when she tracks me down and tells me I'm going to be a daddy. Jaw, meet floor. Now I've insisted that she and our little peach pit move in with me after her apartment floods. She agrees as long as there’s no funny business, no shotgun weddings, and no more nights spent naked together. Sounds easy enough. I was prepared for the late-night runs for more pickles and peanut butter, but I wasn’t prepared for Tess. She’s like a glitter rainbow sparkling in the middle of my all-neutrals house, messing up my rigid schedule and turning my world upside down. What the hell do we do next?

Adorkably brilliant!

AWK-WEIRD is perfectly titled. I instantly loved Tess and her amazingly unique personality. Cole is also weird, which is wonderful! Nobody is perfect, but life is all about finding someone who complements your weirdness. This book nails that connection. Add some self doubt, stubborn characters hell bent on protecting themselves my NOT changing anything and then sprinkle in some serious connections on a soul-bending level with some delicious sexual tension and you get something wonderful.

I listened to this on audible and loved every moment. Tim and Kelsey are excellent and I will definitely listen to more of their work. Definitely worth the credit. Sweet, dorky, sexy, wonderful!

meh

I've really enjoyed this author in the past but this book packed sparkle, instead it felt pumped out and relied too much in basic room com tropes and specific ones to this group of friends.
by the end, I felt like the h wasn't worth rooting for and the H was only slightly better.

this is not up to the Lucy and Frankie caliber

Awk-weird

I was so looking forward to this book as the culmination of Gina, Lucy, Fallon, and finally Tess's story. The narration for the others was all done by the same narrators so I didn't think too much of it when narrators were switched out. It was so distracting that I couldn't concentrate on the story . It sounded so FAST, nasally and high pitched. I tried slowing down from 1 to .75 but that was too slow. Maybe it was just me... but I would suggest sampling and then sample again before purchasing.

One of the best audios I've EVER listened to!

Have you ever listened or read a book that you identified with the characters so much? Well, this was it for me. This book was exactly what I needed to listen to. Tess and Cole have an unconventional start to their relationship. Then poof! There is a surprise pregnancy to complicate matters. They both fight their attraction and feelings for each other that it hurts.
This book seriously had it ALL. Comedy, hot guys playing hockey, hilarious animal and HOT scenes. Tim Paige has quickly become one of my top narrators and he does an amazing job on this book. Him and Kelsey have a great combination of voices that lend so well together. Kelsey is always amazing and captures the spirit of Tess perfectly. I really can't say enough amazing things about this book. Now I want a kitty named Khan too!
Thank you Avery for writing a book about awkward characters. As a seriously awkward person myself, this book seriously hit home for me. And thank you to Tim and Kelsey for bringing it to life.
HIGHLY recommend.

Fun. starts strong

I rather enjoyed the first half of the book. Despite not being a fan of failed condom plot plots, this one wasn’t terrible. We have two trivia fans with chemistry and some coping mechanisms that are becoming more hinderance than help. Wedding hookup with complication.

The problem is, that’s the whole plot. After the very well handled “this baby is happening” scenes, things bop along well enough for a while. Two people like each other and have great sex, but keep convincing themselves to part ways despite a baby on the way and no real need to part ways. Halfway through, the push-pull with the coping mechanisms stagnates. The issues recycle a couple times without moving forward. It’s intensely shallow and without nuance. It makes for a breezy read, but I wanted an actual discussion about the ex. I wanted a path for not-Thor’s OCD to not go away, but be accommodated since she already knew it was, in many ways, helpful to him. Her issue, while deep seated, needed a less complex solution and got it, but only after beating her head against the same wall and not discussing it a few times. More discussion would have helped and added depth.

I don’t really understand why they work. He has drunken rebound sex and… somehow she’s the one? I mean, she’s fine and all but he is an athlete who makes (presumably) millions of dollars and would be draped in available women but somehow doesn’t date. It’s just too simple.

The friendships are the best part of the book. Both main characters have good friends who provide good advice and come to their aid and hang out and joke with them. The cat, Khan!, is enough of a character to be worth including, but if he’s still bitey when the baby comes, that’s unsafe. We don’t find out beyond an expectation that’s he’ll outgrow biting.

Steam: Medium-low M/F. Starts off page, moves on page. There are a couple hot scenes but nothing particularly spicy. I never really understood how this guy who doesn’t date at all, even platonically, for months st a time outside the ex, got good at sex if he’s a basic guy who doesn’t like variety or trying new things.

Narration: well done. good quality.

Perfect narrator pairing

I'm not usually a fan of stories that involve accidental pregnancy, but ...

this book is definitely an exception to the rule.

Avery Flynn did a beautiful job of taking an old trope and giving it a new twist. Even better, she knows how to make the listener laugh.

Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro make the perfect duo for this story. Both are incredibly talented with dialogue. The characters are all real and distinct without be overdone. They both also have a knack at comedic timing and the sexy parts are, well, suoer sexy.

So much in common

I love this Heroine! She is so smart, funny and sweet. The fact that she was swept into something so world changing just because the Hero's buddies are idiot's who have little common sense at times. The relationship these two seem to have is effortless yet strained. Neither have much of a problem until they need to try to share space and time together. I can understand why she can't think about wanting more. He wants someone else. Always has and she won't throw herself at someone who doesn't want her. She deserved better then what she got. My first thought was at least the Hero would take responsibility, but then became sick to my stomach on the Heroine's behalf. Who wants someone who is only part time? Something is better than nothing right? Nothing like screwing up your kid from the beginning. He didn't want it to happen either and I felt for him. I was also pissed at him. Still stuck on someone who dosen't even want him and he just lets the Heroine hang. I am disappointed in him that it seems only sex and time made him even look at her differently. Like that was all she was, something to let him waste time until he could get what he really wanted. I was pissed at her for only accepting that from him and not what she really deserved. I think I am more sad that so many people take only what they can get these days, instead of what they really deserve. He had much more belief in himself and much more support than she did, but he acted put out by helping her while she is pregnant with his kid. Grrrrrrr... So much frustration with these characters, but not with the writing or story. The performance was very good. I just grumble with women who won't act strong and demand the life that they deserve. She has good reason, but she is too quietly strong. Holding her own on her own like usual. Someone smack that boy around to wake his ass up! He is blind and has no intuition. Grrrrr...

Facts Galore!

I am not one to stick to a strict schedule such as Cole, and I was ecstatic to hear that he was so care free at the end.
Struggles are real for everyone, some have it more difficult than others. This story flows easily through the hero and heroines past difficulties they have faced. Throw in the curveball in the very beginning of the storyline and I was hooked! Avery Flynn knows how to entrap her readers and keep them wanting more!

These narrators, Tim and Kelsey have brought this story to life. The unique emotions and powerful tones kept the scenes alive.
Well done by all!
