À propos de cet audio

"Brother, do not try to follow me once you have read this. No good can come of it..." When Clifford Fox QC receives a desperate letter from his estranged younger brother, Simon, he departs his comfortable Yorkshire home to locate him. The letter outlines the harrowing events that have led Simon to the very edge of sanity.

Following a stint at the Brentwell Rehabilitation Unit, failed architect and recovering alcoholic Simon is invited by an old school-friend to Abbot's Keep - a Tudor residence, nestled deep in remote Berkshire countryside. Soon after arriving, he is left to explore the neighboring monastery ruins and discover the house's dark history. But the more he learns, the more certain he becomes that he is not alone at Abbot's Keep, and that nothing is as it seems. But can he stop the house's medieval past repeating itself one final time? And can his brother find him before it's too late?

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Abbot’s Keep is refreshing a hell. Finally, a ghost story that reminds you why the basement is so terrifying!" (Brett McNeill of Rue Morgue Magazine)
"Ashforth does Edgar Allen Poe and Bram Stoker proud delivering a solid contribution to the literary movement. It is time that the ghost story made a comeback. With writers like Benedict Ashforth writing Abbot’s Keep, a revival just might be at hand." (Matthew J. Barbour of Horror Novel Reviews)
"A really entertaining read with a delightful frisson of fear." (Simon Ball of Horror Hothouse)

A very creepy story that weaves together well the surreal with supernatural, fictional folk/ myth/ history. Plus The narrator was perfect.

Brilliant narrator + a good story = a great combination.

Loved the reader. The story is compelling too you want to keep reading to see what he ( the brother) did next!

So happy I didn't allow a low review to deter me from listening to this book! it was a delight, both the story and the narration.

Delightful story

This atmospheric Benedict Ashforth tale is told through a number of letters: correspondence between forlorn alcoholic 'Simon Fox' and his estranged QC brother 'Clifford Fox'.. and between Clifford and his worried/mortified wife 'Annabelle'. Clifford attempts to rescue his brother from an irrevocable descent into madness while surrounded by malevolent spirits in the ruins of a medieval monastery.
The plotting is a little constricted by "gothic" conventions.. but near Poe-quality - and Ashforth understands the macabre and how to describe a moody setting. I quite liked the tale.

Unhelpfully, distinctly "average" narration by Ric Jerrom doesn't help the situation. Don't get me wrong - Jerrom is a solidly professional reader (quite emotive, actually) - just not particularly a standout. He overdoes it at times. Audible Studios Inc. could have gotten similarly effective results from any reader in their stable.

Altogether, I rate 'Abbot's Keep' 6 stars out of 10. I appreciate finding the sub-3-hour offering on the 'Plus' menu.. judging it a reasonable spooky distraction for a quiet Halloween-adjacent evening. If they ask for money, however, you should spend it elsewhere.
