Im not sure why there are so many negative reviews about this book, I’m just glad that I decided to give this a chance anyways :) I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book, including the narration. Give it a chance too, you won’t be disappointed!

I very much enjoyed the characters in this novel. Its easy to picture them with the minds eyes thanks to the colorful descriptions.

The story of this book is great ! There’s lots of plot twist and the author finds ways to keep everything exciting ! The biggest issue of this book is the five or six sex scenes that are very graphic and not needed. They do not drive the plot forward much and just create a weird ambiance. If you find sexual content disturbing this book isn’t for you. If you can look past it the book is great and leaves you with a great feeling of relief and awe.

There’s some good writing and story in here somewhere. But… for someone who glosses over unrealistic sex scenes, this one was over the top.
The entire back half of this book was sex scenes composed with almost crude depictions and uncomfortable repetitions.
I like a good love story, but who needs to hear about rock hard erections and mounds over and over again, to find out who the killer is?
Would have much preferred better back stories and uncomfortable first times.
Oh, and it’s a lot sexist. I had to relook at the publishing date a couple times when terms like « possession » was used instead of jealousy and domination.
If you are going to write a love story, sex scene. Please at least try and not sound like a complete asshole.
No self appreciating female wants to think a man wants to possess her. You took the spousal abuse to a second level letting the main character use thoughts like that.

I liked the idea of the story, but it was hard to stomach the male dominant world and women swooning over the men and their manliness. Other than that. I liked figuring out who done it.

definitely a struggle to finish, the story was slow and so predictable and the way they always said his full name really bothered me. I'm glad this was a free download

boring story

I am no prude. A little judiciously-placed romance or even vigorous screwing can add sexual tension to a quality story - elevating it significantly. Unfortunately, Beverly Barton is far too heavy-handed. Virtually every plot twist/story progression is preceeded or followed by perpetually horny characters pumping away and "exploding" in sweaty orgasms. To be fair, the engrossing plot (involving stereotypical soap-opera-quality "shocking" affairs, secret illegitimate children & jealous murder) depends heavily on sexual proclivity.. but the rutting rises to the level of eye-rolling irrelevance ("What? Really? They're doing it again?!? Why?").

Narrator Eileen Stevens does the best she can with the constant pillow-talk dialogue. She largely avoids the almost obligatory breathiness and rather provides an interested read with exemplary diction, timbre, cadence, and tone.
Stevens's impressive performance is easily the best feature for this recording - I would love to hear what she could do with better writing.

I downloaded this story for free as part of the 'Plus' initiative for Audible subscribers, and I am generally happy that I did so. Despite some glaring drawbacks, I rate it 3.5/10 stars and can testify that it provided a couple of distracting snowy afternoons of entertainment.  'After Dark' is a little too steamy for my tastes, but you might appreciate it more than I did. Feel free to give it a try.. although I judge it not worth money if they were to ask you for it.
