'Nobody in the world was more inadequate to act the heroine than I was.'

Why did Agatha Christie spend her career pretending that she was 'just' an ordinary housewife, when clearly she wasn't? As Lucy Worsley says, 'She was thrillingly, scintillatingly modern'. She went surfing in Hawaii, she loved fast cars, and she was intrigued by the new science of psychology, which helped her through devastating mental illness.

So why - despite all the evidence to the contrary - did Agatha present herself as a retiring Edwardian lady of leisure?
She was born in 1890 into a world which had its own rules about what women could and couldn't do. Lucy Worsley's biography is not just of an internationally renowned bestselling writer. It's also the story of a person who, despite the obstacles of class and gender, became an astonishingly successful working woman.

With access to personal letters and papers that have rarely been seen, Lucy Worsley's biography is both authoritative and entertaining and makes us realise what an extraordinary pioneer Agatha Christie was - truly a woman who wrote the twentieth century.©2022 Lucy Worsley (P)2022 Hodder & Stoughton Limited

In truth, I could listen to Lucy Worsley all day! Her book and reading were highly enjoyable as she explored the person and world of Agatha Christie.

Really enjoyable listen

Lucy Worsley is one of the greatest tv presenters today and has captured me and taught me so much about British history, so to have her telling me about one of my favourite authors is a match made by the gods. Worsley brings her charm and story telling prowess to this fascinating life of a legendary writer while being nuanced about the more difficult aspects of examining a time gone by. Top notch, SO glad to have the author narrate such great work.

A crossover made in heaven

Excellent biography, excellent research . . . volume consistency issues made it frustrating for me to listen to, though. (Many sentences taper off so softly! Not really a problem with ear budd but noticable with a regular speaker . . .

Interesting Biography: Sound editing poor

Christie is that uncommon writer of fiction whose own life was just as or even more fascinating than her books. Her carefully constructed stereotypical facade hid an amazing and unconventional reality. Lucy Worsley tells us the story of Christie's real adventures in her usual clear and engaging prose. And how charming to listen to Worsley herself - a talented narrator. Enjoy!

A very thorough biography

While I knew of Agatha Christie through her books, I knew almost nothing of her as a person. I loved how Lucy Worsley told the tale of this great author.

I absolutely loved this book
