My favourite narrator besides Grover Gardner!
I couldn't stop listening to this beautiful book. The touching story of Klein's struggles in WW2 and her triumph of surviving is inspiring.

Another must read heart wrenching story of captivity and cruelty against Jewish people during WW11. It is critically important that we never forget what happened during this time period and take steps to try to ensure it never happens again. I say try because such atrocities continue our world today.

A heart wrenching story everybody should read. I sometimes found the level of detail related to flowers, furnishings, birds and relationships (Abec in particular) to be a bit repetitive with a level of detail I felt was unwarranted at times. Having said this, I am sure it was important to Gerda to remember every detail of her life during that time period.

For me, it was the narration made it less engaging. Yet I persisted in listening and am so glad I did. I found the acoustics for the narration to be very poor (possibly based on budget?), but more importantly, it just sounded to me like the narrator was bored to death reading it. I assumed the narrator was of Jewish descent, which would of course be important to the author, and when I looked her up, indeed she was. I understood choosing a person of Jewish heritage to read the story, but for me, this particular narrator was a poor choice and it really detracted from the overall listening experience. I was also shocked to find out that the narrator was an actress who had earned accolades for her narration in other texts. I failed to understand why (apologies), and to be honest, would not listen to another book with this person as narrator.

One thing that stuck with me was at one point, when a group of Hungarian women came into Gerda’s encampment, and she talked about the pre-existing racism between these two groups. This is jaw dropping, considering they were all prisoners and were all treated with the same level of disrespect and cruelty by their captors. This really saddened me😢. To think that even though as prisoners of the Germans, all set for eventual extermination they could not see themselves as equals, as innocent pawns caught up in the crosshairs of Nazi thinking. If not then, when? When will we ever learn that at NO point is racism or stereotyping okay. What in the name of God, or Allah or Buddha or Mother Earth, or any other form of spiritual guidance one looks to, is wrong with us? When will we ever learn? Why do we continue to judge, hate, and condemn an entire group or race of people based on the actions of a few or in some cases no actions at all? When will we ever learn, that within every group, regardless of colour, or race or heritage or faith, or gender or gender expression etc., there is always representation of good and evil folks within every group. I was so happy to hear the author rise above this when she made a new friend in this group shortly after their arrival. On that note, I was also very happy that the author recognized how fortunate she and her fellow prisoners were in the first part of her life-changing and incredibly sad journey of forced labor and imprisonment, to have a German female supervisor, who was kind to them. It was very nice to read that, to see humanity in the face of one who just happened to be born a German. We know there were others; there always are.

Reading these kinds of historical texts for me never gets old and is an important reminder of how fragile each of our lives are, especially in the times we find ourselves in currently. Remember ... "we must never forget". Thank you Gerda Weissmann Klein for sharing your story with us❤️ God bless you and yours🙏🏼

Thank you Gerda for sharing your story in all it’s entirety. It still is hard to believe that certain human beings can treat other human beings in such a demeaning and horrific manner. In this case, life triumphs over pure evil. By telling your story, the world remembers....

All I can say is thank you....

The noise and talking in the background was distracting and annoying, but still well worth listening to.

How could it have happened? The forces of evil are powerful but God is all powerful. My heart was touched with Gerdas tremendous resilience and in spite of all odds she never lost faith. What a beautiful blessing she received to come to marry such a wonderful husband! You were so kind! May God bless you all!

Tear jerker!

I can not recommend this book enough! A beautifully written memoir of a young woman who survived the unimaginable. I read it in less than 2 days. It's gripping, haunting, and tragic, but also heartfelt and intertwined with love, hope, and humanity.

Gerda's strength and courage is honorable

This has to be one of the best books I've "read". Weissmann Klein is a beautiful writer and the story was compelling. I was amazed at how long everything went on, and how the WK and others create a new normal at each stage of the war, clinging to hope, finding joy in the smallest of things. This should be required reading in all schools.

Everyone must read this book (or listen to it)

This autobiographical account of Gerda Weissmann’s survival in war-torn Europe is gripping, authentic and compelling. She speaks for countless others who suffered and died without a trace.
