Description

Perhaps it is a blessing when Jasmine Dent dies in her sleep. At last an end has come to the suffering of a body horribly ravaged by disease. It may well have been suicide; she had certainly expressed her willingness to speed the inevitable. But small inconsistencies lead her neighbor, Superintendent Duncan Kincaid, to a startling conclusion: Dent was murdered. But if not for mercy, why would someone destroy a life already doomed? As Kincaid and his appealing assistant Sergeant Gemma James sift through the dead woman's strange history, a troubling puzzle emerges: a bizarre amalgam of charity and crime--and of the blinding passions that can drive the human animal to perform cruel and inhuman acts.

Really quite good

Of late I’ve been disappointed by books with twists and turns that are fascinating.’, but then poorly wrapped up in the end. This was a good, simple read that didn’t disappoint

Well done!

Loved it! Loved the character development... seeing the reality of their personal lives and how it has its effect on their jobs. I truly am eager to read the next book in the series.

Rated 'M' for 'Mature'

In terms of parental guidelines, this story rates one level higher than a typical PG-13 '"Cozy" Mystery. The whodunit itself (starting with the death of a neighbor of Scotland Yard's Duncan Kincaid) is moderately challenging and on a par with a typical Agatha Christie plot - and there is a notable lack of gore, chilling actions/imagery, or expletives - but that's more than fine. There are hints of some very mature +/- dark motives in the crime.
Fans of 'Cherringham'/'Mydworth' books or 'Midsomer Murders'/'Murder, She Wrote'-type primetime Television should thoroughly enjoy this Deborah Crombie effort.
Bottom Line: this is a passable traditional 'Sleuth' story with gritty themes that you could easily consume around younger teenagers.

To be honest, however, the book itself isn't that great (i.e. I've read much better in the same vein).
Fortunately, Michael Deehy's narration elevates it. If given the choice between a text copy (Paper/eBook) and this audiobook iteration, you should choose this one. Deehy's diction timbre, cadence, tone, and voice-acting are commendable. Yes, he reads a little bit too slowly (listen at 1.15X), but Deehy was cast nicely and easily makes this recording worth a listen. Well done, Blackstone Audio.

I am more of a conventional Mystery-Thriller afficianado and thus found this book moderately milquetoast & 'Ho-Hum' uncaptivating, but it still rates 5.5 stars out of 10. I am grateful to Audible for making it available in the 'Plus' catalogue - it may even merit a Credit for the right reader.
