I picked this book to learn about "The Extraordinary New Science of the Immune System," and I can't say I learned anything about that. I have come back to it multiple times, thinking that maybe I am missing something, but ultimately it seems that the book that is lacking. For example, the chapter on T cells discusses in detail the life of the man who discovered them but doesn't explain what they do, why, and what can go wrong. The life story may be interesting but it doesn't help me understand the immune system which is what this book purports to be about.
It seems the author wanted to write a book about his friend and used his immune research as an excuse. The other narratives are severely underdeveloped, with the 2 female patients comprising 1 section. The science was lacking and the history would only be relevant if there was a foundation for it, which there was not.
