Legion Dark Ops has always been a unit shrouded in secrecy. Tasked with performing covert missions, its kill teams are filled with the best warriors from within the ranks of the Legion. Kel Turner is one of the youngest legionnaires ever to be selected to its ranks. After many battles and trials, he is faced with the greatest challenge of his life - operating by himself on a remote planet at the galaxy's edge, a foot soldier for the policies of the duplicitous House of Reason, tasked with solving a crisis that would take ten kill teams to resolve.

They were the Savages. Raiders from our distant past. Elites who left Earth to create tailor-made utopias aboard the massive lighthuggers that crawled through the darkness between the stars. But the people they left behind on a dying planet didn't perish in the dystopian nightmare the Savages had themselves created: they thrived, discovering faster-than-light technology and using it to colonize the galaxy ahead of the Savages, forming fantastic new civilizations that surpassed the wildest dreams of Old Earth.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Go to war or go to jail. For small-time street hustler Cam Alvarez, the choice is simple.... He has no family, no friends, no place in the world...nothing to lose. When his latest con results in the death of a cartel hit man, Cam opts to join the Marines and leave Earth to fight a vicious alien enemy. Drafted into the Marine Drop-Troopers, Cam discovers there’s one thing he’s even better at than running street-con games, and that’s killing the enemy.

Description
The galaxy follows a logical structure.
Legion Dark Operator Kel Turner believed that.
To know the order of battle and how an enemy unit was organized was to know its purpose and how to destroy it. That logic existed down to the smallest scale, down to what made up life itself. To know a molecule’s structure was to know its function - they were one and the same. It was no different for Kel. He was Dark Ops and Dark Ops was him. Down to his last cell and very soul.
But the covert action arm of the Legion is changing. And so is he. And if Dark Ops is no longer the same, how could Kel be Kel?
From fighting a gray war against a cunning adversary bent on genocide, to slogging through a jungle hell full of rabid dog-men, Kel won't stop until the mission is complete. Kel was the mission. But if the day comes when there would no longer be a Dark Ops for Kel, what would his mission be then?
Who would he become?

Underwhelming ending
For the fifth book of an action series, and the seeming conclusion to the protagonists' stint in dark ops, it was rather underwhelming. It didn't really deliver the tension it was going for and it wrapped up rather too cleanly. Just a meh from me.

Hey Doc, I hope you read your reviews
In many ways this was your best book. I hope this isn’t the end of the series? I always find the poetry in action books like yours to be really weak to poor. The poem you ended this one with was masterful. Very well done.
I look forward to reading more of your work. These five have been reflective. The search for the soul of the warrior. I think they add much to the Galaxy’s Edge universe. I’ve loved them.

Another Stunner!
I'd expect no less from the tactically brilliant mind of Doc Spears. Tie in the Galaxy's Edge universe and you have a winning combo. the style of combat writing is superb, and the descriptions of events are such that you feel like you are there. Outstanding job again!

Continuation of a sub par story and narration
I swear I’ve never heard such an awkward use of first names and “brother”. Just a lot of missed attempts at comedy, weird/awkward/obnoxiously sensitive conversations between what are supposed to be bad asses. I swore never to listen to another one of these in the series 2 books ago, but I love pretty much every other book but this series and that garbage ham fisted free one with the marine girl. Just a bunch of touchy feely crap, subpar story, obnoxiously detailed workouts, and just basically putting a bunch of crap in there just to say “hey I am/was a super friend or seal or whatever in real life”. The most important thing that really makes me consider this series a failure is a) the narrator is garbage and b) it 100% misses the heart and soul of Anspach and coles writing together. I get amped up and intrigued with their content. Love it, even savage 2 kept me intrigued and engaged. DX that narrator and Anspach and Cole please edit down doc spears work to be in the spirit of your universe rather than a blow by blow of a sensitive operators tickle fights. Also delete all of the “brother’s” and “operators”. Ridiculous.

Eh...
The premise of the stories are interesting enough to make me want to hear how they end. However the writing is done in a way that just isn’t natural. People just don’t talk like they do in the book. This could be in part due to the narrator, the only way I can deal with the cadence of this narrator is to put the book at 1.5 speed. He is the only narrator I do this with.
Suggestions:
1. Work on making the characters talk more naturally, it will make them feel more human.
2. Consider a new narrator, the current one has poor pacing and makes all the characters sound like teenagers not hardened troops.
3. Consider this as an anthology series with new Dark Operators each book. It would build out the universe more and give greater perspective.
