Description

Animal Farm is an allegorical novella by George Orwell, first published in the UK in 1945. It is the tale of farm animals that rebel against the farmer, intending to establish a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. With stirring slogans, they set out to create utopia. However, the rebellion is betrayed and the farm ends up in a state worse than it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon.

This is the setting for one of the most revealing satiric fables of all time - an acerbic tale for adults that records the process from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism which is even worse. When Animal Farm was first published, Stalinist Russia was its target. Today it is quite clear that wherever and whenever freedom is suppressed, the message of George Orwell’s masterpiece is still relevant. Time Magazine chose the book as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. It also features at number 31 on the Modern Library List of Best 20th-Century Novels.

Outstanding Allegory - Poor Performance

This is an interesting story about a working farm that rebels from control by humans and deteriorates into infighting, hypocrisy, authoritarianism, and violence. Orwell uses a story about an English farm as a model for this brilliant treatment of his interpretation of what happened after the Russian Revolution - complete with characters representing Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin. The writing is brilliant and the imagery startling. The narrative is engrossing and thought-provoking. Adriel Brandt has a monotonous style of reading, unfortunately. He relates the story clearly - good enunciation - but the performance has little else going for it. It's disappointing to hear this fascinating satire delivered with zero emotion.

Despite a poor performance, this recording of a rightfully celebrated allegorical tale is worth 8 out of 10 stars.

Not the best, but good read

The book feels like it's the summary for another book. the story is good, it could have had more drama and events to it. but it doesn't. it is laid out as one simple sentence after another: X did that. Y did this. Z said that. etc... so it doesn't conduct feelings to the reader (listener). this did not help the narrator at all. so he sounded most of the time like a text to speech programs, monotonic, doesn't grab your attention.
So may be it will be a lot better as an actual read, not as audio.

A metaphor for life

Hard to believe that a book written long ago could manage to so accurately portray our corrupt and vile western leaders. Definitely worth a listen /read if you can stomach a story that reveals everything wrong with society and our government.

Grim

Grim story of corruption, deceit and a dystopian rewriting of history.

That said the story itself was simple and full of gullible characters, the only sad thing is you have to wonder if humanity today is any more intelligent or better at remembering history than the horses.

Depressing!

Published in 1945, this rather short novel is a satire criticizing the Stalinist regime in the USSR. It includes quite blatant references to the Bolshevik seizure of power, to information control and distortion, to Trotsky, to famines, to failed five-year plans, etc.

Sadly, it is difficult for the reader not to feel that the work could have been further enhanced, perhaps by developing some individual characters. As it is, many good leads are not brought to full fruition, regarding Napoleon and Snowball, for instance. Also, paradoxically, a somewhat elitist point of view is perceptible, with the majority of the population (literally) being sheep, who mindlessly bleat slogans without understanding what they mean.

Worse, the overall dénouement is devoid of any hint of hope for lasting human progress.

George Orwell is in a league of his own

It’s astonishing how many of the tactics employed by the pigs on the animal farm are still in use in modern politics today. From the uprooting of tradition to the twisting of information, this book is succinct and to the point; everybody is corruptible, and if we aren’t careful, we may turn into that which we originally feared, or as bad, become subjects to the ones who have. The narrator’s voice is very relaxing, too much so in fact, as I became sleepy numerous times throughout the listening, despite being compelled to continue listening through every line. Read/Listen to this classic, bolster your knowledge, and lift the veil from your eyes, all is not as it seems on Animal Farm, and certainly not in the world today either. The path to hell is paved with good intentions, and if you sit back and allow that road to be built, you just may be the one to traverse it.

A warning to the world

This book should be mandatory reading or listening for every single person on this planet. The dangers of socialism and communism cannot be overstated.

Excellent performance and pacing. Will definitely listen to again.

Animal Version of 1984

I preferred this book over 1984 but it has a lot of key similarities (probably by design). I liked this one more because it wasn’t as dragged out as 1984 and it was easier to grasp the point. Definitely would recommend if highschool students need a book to read (technically a novella) for english class.

truly important

an amazingly comedic view of a true atrocity, allowing the full circle of tragedy plus time. without diluting the morbidity of which it discusses.
