Description

In this sequel to More Than Cake, MJ and Heath are older, hopefully wiser, and parents to two active toddlers.

They're going out on tour together to support individual albums, and have hired the wonderful Archie to be their nanny so their twin daughters can go with them. But they don't realize they've hired a snake to travel with them, a young keyboard player who wants Heath for herself, and will do whatever it takes to get him.

MJ and Heath are settling in to the second half of the first decade of their marriage, going through some strains in the ties that bind them together. Heath has become moody, irritable, critical of MJ for the first time ever. He's almost a stranger to MJ.

All of this, plus the strain of being on the road with their little ones cause cracks to start showing in what was almost the perfect marriage. MJ, in her anguish, turns to the kind bass player for friendship in her loneliness, while Heath begins to spend more and more time with the treacherous Carissa.

Contains mature themes.

Morally hard to deal with despite the “nice” surface story line

I don’t like the lead characters approach to the difficulty in her marriage - she is understandably hurt but acts childishly and immaturely. Cutting off all avenues of communication is never going to allow any resolution and at no point does she allow herself to believe nothing but the worst of her “for better or worse” life partner and father of her children. However, it was the notion of her “options” only being hers to make or take independently without consultation with her husband and when she is supposedly in a committed marriage and also has all the support and resources available to her that really shocked turned my stomach. Maybe this idea of trying to make a marriage work together and of not being able to autonomously make such significant decisions without allowing your husband any day are old fashioned and outmoded but I don’t think I can ever read anything again by this author. If I could give this book negative stars, I would. I also think the lead character is blind to her own body issues, all while refusing to recognize the challenges that will bring to her marriage and again, jumping all over her husband if he ever hints at them in their discussions, all while trying to reassure her. If the lead character thinks those precociously intelligent girls of hers aren’t going to pick up on her own negative body attitudes and transfer them to themselves in the future, especially as everyone is always telling them how much they look like her despite them always telling them they are beautiful, she is deluding herself. I understand that none of these are simple issues and have long-standing mental health roots, but the approach is unbalanced and unrealistic. Heath can never be enough for MU because, despite her many talents and the reassurance of others (much like she tries to verbally give to her children), MJ never believes she is enough. This book was disappointing. It does have an HEA in which they gloss over all the previous problems, so it does work out okay (for now) - although I think the couple could use some therapy on how to deal with their marital issues as they are sure to arise again (other than just ascribing them to the medical issues that arise) and they don't discuss this. Could have been stronger even with the HEA.
