Histoire
As one of the strategists behind the famous 2012 RNC “autopsy,” Miller conducts his own forensic study on the pungent carcass of the party he used to love, cutting into all the hubris, ambition, idiocy, desperation, and self-deception for everyone to see. In a bracingly honest reflection on both his own past work for the Republican Party and the contortions of his former peers in the GOP establishment, Miller draws a straight line between the actions of the 2000s GOP to the Republican political class's Trumpian takeover, including the horrors of January 6th.

Now, demonstrating her majestic command of this story, Haberman reveals in full the depth of her understanding of the 45th president himself, and of what the Trump phenomenon means. In this revelatory and newsmaking book, Haberman brings together the events of his life into a single mesmerizing work. Ascending to the leadership role of US Attorney for the Southern District, which includes Manhattan and several counties to the north, is a capstone to any legal career: it entails guiding a team of the best lawyers in America in selecting and winning cases that often have global import. Geoffrey Berman was honored to be tapped for the job by Donald Trump in 2018. The manner in which Trump had dispatched his predecessor Preet Bharara was troubling, but the institution was fabled for its independence. Surely he could manage.

Description
New York Times Bestseller
An irreverent look behind the scenes of American politics from one of the most sought-after operatives in the Democratic Party
Lis Smith isn’t your average political strategist and Any Given Tuesday isn’t your typical political memoir. At once a revealing look at human nature at the highest levels of power and an intimate portrayal of a sometimes rocky personal journey, it breaks all the rules. Smith doesn’t pretend to be perfect—she owns the controversial choices that landed her in the tabloids, as well as the unorthodox ones that have paid off and defined her successful career.
Any Given Tuesday follows Smith from her earliest experiences as a college-aged intern to her days as a trusted adviser and confidante to some of the most high-profile politicians in the country—including her star turn as senior adviser on Pete Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential campaign. Animated by Smith’s love for the hand-to-hand combat of politics and sustained by her deeply-held belief that it’s still possible to effect positive change, it’s an odyssey full of highs and lows and larger-than-life characters.
Throughout, Smith shows what it’s really like behind the curtain: what happens when the lights go down and the cameras turn off, how it feels to be in the eye of the political media storm, and how the people responsible for heady, life and death decisions are as flawed as the rest of us.
While the journey hasn’t always been smooth, Lis Smith has seen and learned a lot—and she shares it all in this eye-opening, entertaining memoir.

Tales from the political trenches
As someone who has worked on campaigns, I found this book to be refreshing, talking about the less than glamorous roles that those behind the scenes tackle. Also, well written with some good laughs. Definitely recommend.

Narrators should know the subject matter!!
I was disappointed that Lis Smith didn’t narrate her own book but bought the audiobook anyway. The narrator did a decent job reading but I was shocked and annoyed that she didn’t know and hadn’t been coached on some fundamentals. I mean, to repeatedly and egregiously mispronounce Chasten’s name, and not know which word to emphasize when saying “South Bend”?? Come on, Audible! Do better!!
PS: Who makes these narration decisions anyway? Lis Smith and Tim Miller are pretty well known to most people who buy their books. It’s weird to hear their intimate stories in strangers’ voices. Let them narrate their own books, for Pete’s sake. (No pun intended.)
