À propos de cet audio

America in the 1920s was a place of drama, tension, and hedonism. It glittered and seduced: jazz, flappers, the birth of Hollywood, and a glamorous gangster-led crime scene flourishing under prohibition.

But it was also punctuated by momentous events. such as the political show trials and the huge Ku Klux Klan march. It also produced a splendid array of writers, musicians, and film stars, from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Bessie Smith and Charlie Chaplin.

This is an exhilarating portrait of the era of invention, glamour and excess.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"[A]chieves its obvious, if unstated aim of being an enjoyable readable romp through the period." (Telegraph)

Well researched, this collection of stories and profiles of major figures during the jazz age could have been fascinating and enjoyable. Unfortunately, I found it hard to listen to for more than half a chapter at a time due to the narrator’s choice to adopt an exaggerated, drawling American accent every time she read a quote from an American historical figure. Personally, I found this affectation unnecessary. This isn’t a novel in need of dramatization to engage the listener, the history itself is fascinating enough. It’s a shame really, because Ms. Walker has a lovely speaking voice that I could have listened to with great enjoyment for hours.
