Boring
I picked this book because of John Lee. He is by far, my most favorite book narrator. However, the story feels empty. Too many details about each character’s life and nothing on the main story. The why and the whom is briefly mentioned at the end of the book but nothing as to how the story gets there. I found it boring.

Best Quirke yet!
Could be the best Quirke novel yet! The ending will take your breath away. Likewise, Lee’s performance was a tour de force. His is the voice I hear when reading the words. The characters come alive, the narrative performance is pure Banville. Well done!

Families deal with secrets in their own way.
The Brits write some amazing thrillers, replete with corrupt, malicious politicians who do whatever they can get away with to keep their secrets and privileged positions. Characterizations are so well done, that you see their malicious habits, breathe in the bright, Spanish sunshine, and choke on the cigarette smoke everywhere. Enjoyed seeing young Phoebe resist the opinions of her sanctimonious boyfri3nd. I suspect this story was first published in late 1959s, but still so enjoyably creepy as plotvslowly builds to a showdown. Loved the ending too! The Latimer family scandal was really nasty. Reminded of Mick Herron and John LeCarres novels in the depth of character development, twisting plots, crooked politicians, and government. Just great storytelling! Much better than I expected from introductory blurb.

Good but not stunning
This is a very good audio book. It captured my attention. The story was at times entertaining, but none of the characters were particularly sympathetic.
