Joshua Duffy is a Close Protection Agent—a professional bodyguard— and he's one of the world's elite operatives. That is, he was until his last mission in Lebanon. Against all odds, Josh got his primary out alive, but the cost was high. Josh lost his lower left leg.

There's not much call for an elite bodyguard with such an injury. So, Josh has to support his family working as a mall cop in New Jersey. For a man like Josh, this is purgatory on earth, but miracles can occur even in Paramus.

A lucky run-in with an old comrade promises to get Josh back in the field for one last job. The UN is sending a peace mission into the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico, an area so dangerous it's known as Espinazo del Diablo—the Devil's Spine. Only a fool would think they could broker peace between the homicidal drug cartels in the region, and only a madman would sign on to keep those fools alive.

Not all hero but a hero

Good story with good background of the main characters. Ending was not anticipated. No one should go to Mexico

Great story!

Mark Greaney delivers a new series with a great hero that's easy to cheer for. Unlike the Grey Man, Josh isn't a ninja superhero, nor is he Clancy's Jack Ryan. But this fella is someone you really cheer for, as is his wife, and his crew. Good ending, and I really look forward to book 2. I did not realize that this was originally a dramatic, full cast production - I might buy that for a listen at some point, too. Adam Gold is a new narrator for me. He's pretty decent, with a good Mexican Spanish accent where warranted, and does a decent voice for the two female leads.

Interesting story

Many twist and turns in this one. I have been spoiled by Greaney’s grey man series so this one is a close second.

Different

I felt the main character was different than the other characters Mark usually writes about in a story. This was a good change.

Jammed packed with action and surprise twists
