I had to read this book for English class, but had no time to read it myself. I resorted to audiobooks. This book is extremely boring and strange, but the calm reading sped up slightly made it seem like a poorly edited story podcast. Read well, however the quality of the voice changed quite a bit on some chapters. Nonetheless, audible made it easy to listen to and understand the story.

Jane urqhart has a quality to her writing I have yet to define because I find everything about her writing compelling. I envy her capacity to imagine in such starkly eloquent and compassionate realism. For me she takes a seat along side writers like Sebastian Barry and Marilynne Robinson—all perhaps channelling their ancestors to some extent? I first found her book The Underpainter in a library in Sligo Ireland and have haunted other libraries ever since. My only critique is to ask Audible to be sure their readers learn the proper pronunciations of whatever foreign words are written—especially proper names. Irish can’t be sounded out through an English pronunciation. Nevertheless, she’s a wonderful reader—gorgeous voice. The reason I mention the pronunciations is because it breaks the spell.

This story—these characters are kin to me now and always will be.
