Description

The Anishinaabe are guided by the Seven Grandfather Teachings—Love, Bravery, Humility, Wisdom, Honesty, Respect, and Truth. In Seven Truths, we explore each teaching through the eyes of Anishinaabe storyteller Tanya Talaga, and through the lives and experiences of people she’s proud to know. These truths, told through contemporary stories, help us find common ground here on Turtle Island, so that we can live together, justly.

Chillingly Beautiful Powerfully Real

I just listened to the first podcast which captivated me immediately with "to know love is to know peace". What a pleasure it is to have the words of Tanya Talaga spoken and so eloquently supported by the teachings, humour and kindness of Elder Sam. As someone who attended residential school at St. Joseph's in Thunder Bay and attended middle school a short distance from Cecilia Jeffrey this podcast brought memories crashing against the shores of my life. I sincerely think that everyone who listens will feel a connection of some sort. Whether Indigenous or not... Chi miigwetch Tanya for continuing to tell the stories and shine the light.

Excellent Series! All Canadians please listen!

I loved this series! Each episode was written and presented so beautifully. If every Canadian, and indeed every Canadian politician listened to the series and sat with this knowledge, we may be able to take our country's first steps at healing our relationship with first people.
Thanks for this Tanya

Powerful Storytelling - like a punch in the gut

This is NOT what I expected based on the description of ‘Seven Truths’ based on the Grandfather’s Teachings- I was expecting something for children about FNMI culture.

Talaga’s work is WAY BETTER. Definitely PG. Not for young children.

Absolutely engrossing discussion of contemporary FN issues, culture & impact of colonialism & systemic racism affecting all aspects of life - education, healthcare, economic, & legal issues framed around current events & told through the lens of a Grandfather teaching (ie Bravery is the focus for education).

Intelligent, articulate & well thought out interviews & information. Brilliant story telling; a must listen for all Canadians.

The Truth Needs to Be Heard

Listening to Tanya and Sam explain the Seven Truth through current lived experiences has seared them in my heart. All Canadians need to find the humility to learn from and embrace these truths. Powerfully written and performed.

Must listen for every Canadian

The underlying message of this production is hope and reconciliation. The delivery was powerful and as a white male disheartening to hear. I truly hope more people listen to this and begin to explore more and change our ways and values as a society.

Heartwrenching

This was a beautifully scripted and narrated series told in the voice of people who have experienced injustice firsthand. I find it mind boggling that people....humans....are treated this way in Canada to this day. I grew up in Halifax and saw racism toward BIPOC people every day and did not know how to use my voice. I didn't understand the BIPOC experience. I didn't see the systematic ways our infrastructure perpetuated unfairness and despair. I can see it now and want to do better, and be better. This series interested me as an opportunity to continue the journey of learning about racial and cultural injustice, and what it can do to a people. While I was deeply saddened as I listened, I am so grateful that Tanya Talaga captured the stories so eloquently. Understanding life experiences of our fellow humans is a first step toward equality and can lay the foundation for the steps that are needed to follow. I would highly recommend a listen no matter your background. Listen with heart and without judgement and then ask yourself, like I am doing now, what is my next step.

A must read for every Canadian

The heart-breaking truth of tragedy. Our country has lost so many years of knowledge and richness of culture by trying to eliminate our indigenous people. The cruelty and injustice is spoken clearly and simply by the author and leaves a mark of shame and sorrow on my heart. You must listen - it’s worth knowing the real history.

Awesome!!!!!

Great reporting. Things I didn’t know happened. I like that they interviewed the people who were actually there experiencing it. My heart goes out to everyone involved
