Prophetess T Alma Collins Thomas faced significant physical, emotional, and practical challenges during her recovery from a massive stroke.Key challenges included:
  • Physical Dependence: In the initial stages, she was almost entirely dependent on others for basic tasks such as brushing her hair or using the restroom.
  • Mobility and Movement: She was a high fall risk and unable to walk or drive initially, requiring assistance and intensive physical therapy, including learning to walk up and down stairs which she found very scary. She mentions being in a wheelchair for a period of time.
  • Speech and Communication: She had difficulty speaking clearly, which made interactions with visitors overwhelming at times.
  • Health Management: Her blood pressure and blood sugar were initially difficult to control, requiring the right combination of medications to manage.
  • Emotional and Mental Struggles: Despite the immense support from family, friends, and co-workers, she felt helpless, “less of a woman,” and would cry to her husband, apologizing for not being the woman he married.
  • Loss of Normalcy: Her life changed in an instant, and she had to adapt to a completely new normal and a changed body image due to partial paralysis.
  • Daily Tasks: Basic activities that were once simple, like showering, dressing, and making meals, became major challenges that required relearning and immense effort.
  • Unforeseen Tragedies: Her stroke recovery was compounded by other major life events, including the loss of her son and a house fire, which added immense stress and hardship to her journey.
  • Ongoing Limitations: Even after significant progress, she continued to face challenges such as not being able to drive and potential permanent limitations in the function of her hand, though she remained determined to keep trying.
Through it all, her faith was a central component of her recovery, helping her find purpose in her pain and inspiring her to help others facing their own battles. She even wrote several books while bedridden, using one finger, demonstrating her remarkable resilience.
