Reaching for Agreement — Part 2

The Same Mind and the Same Purpose

“Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement… knit together in the same mind and the same purpose.”

— 1 Corinthians 1:10

Being of the same mind and purpose does not mean thinking the same, believing the same, or worshiping the same.

It means we agree on what love requires of us.

When people are hungry, we feed them.

When they are sick, we care for them.

When they are distressed, we comfort them.

When they are strangers, we welcome them.

This is what shared purpose looks like in real life.

We will not always agree on ideas, doctrines, or decisions. But we are called to agree on dignity. We are called to agree on compassion. We are called to agree that every person bears the image of God and is worthy of care.

Unity is not sameness.

Unity is love practiced together.

And when love becomes our shared purpose, agreement is no longer out of reach.
